City of Santa Cruz, CA is Hiring a Service Maintenance Trainee/Worker Near Santa Cruz, CA

The Position

The current vacancy is for a Service Maintenance Trainee/Worker in the Public Works Department. The eligibility list established from this recruitment may be used to fill other Service Maintenance Trainee/Worker vacancies during the life of the list. The eligibility list established from this recruitment is valid for up to one year from the date established unless the list is extended or abolished by the Human Resources Director.
Under supervision, the Service Maintenance Trainee/Worker performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled assignments in the construction, maintenance and repair of City streets and storm drains and performs related duties as assigned.

Typical Duties

(May include, but are not limited, to those duties listed below.)
  • Patching street potholes by loading and operating hot asphalt truck, preparing surfaces, and laying asphalt.
  • Constructing and repairing sidewalks, curbs, gutters, catch basins, storm drains, manholes and retaining walls.
  • Constructing and repairing barricades, barricade flashers, guardrails, fences and other structures.
  • Applying asphalt overlays to street sections.
  • Assembling, installing and repairing street signs and traffic meter posts.
  • Laying out and painting new and faded pavement markings.
  • Mixing and applying paint and epoxy.
  • Shovels, rakes and spreads dirt, sand, gravel, asphalt and other materials.
  • Clears debris, brush and weeds from ditches, culverts and other City facilities.
  • Participates in digging, widening and backfilling trenches and other excavations.
  • Loads, unloads and operates pick-ups and trucks to transport maintenance supplies and materials.
  • Places traffic control flags, signs and cones to direct traffic around work sites; may direct traffic.
  • Uses general carpentry and mechanical hand tools such as brooms, rakes, shovels, ladders, hammers, screwdrivers, pliers, saws, drills and wrenches.
  • Operates equipment such as air compressors, pneumatic hammers, powder activated hammers, chain saws, concrete saws, pipe cutters, sprayers, compactors, forklifts, rollers, backhoes, skidsteer loaders, and trucks.
  • Performs routine maintenance and repair of hand and power tools.
  • Breaks up and patches asphalt and concrete surfaces.
  • Tactfully responds to questions and comments from the public.
  • Responsible for the safe operation of equipment and tools used.
  • May prepare and keep written or computerized records and make material and equipment requests.
  • May occasionally perform simple fabrication and repair of equipment, tools, and parts.
  • May be required to perform duties related to confined space entry and rescue.
  • Performs other related duties that may be reasonably expected as part of this classification.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Position requires sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, climbing, crouching, crawling, balancing, grasping, pushing, pulling, working overhead, making repetitive hand movement, using both hands and both feet, distinguishing by touch and working with finger dexterity in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires talking and hearing; plus near, far and color vision when performing work and operating assigned equipment. The ability to lift, carry, and push tools, equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds is required. The incumbent works outdoors in all weather conditions, occasionally in temperatures above 100 degrees. The working environment has constant noise and subjects the incumbent to vibration. Work takes place on slippery and uneven surfaces, around machinery with moving parts or stationery equipment, around moving objects or vehicles, and occasionally on ladders or scaffolding, and below ground. In the course of work, the incumbent may risk skin and air exposure to solvents, grease, oils, diesel, synthetic diesel, fumes, dust, and silica. May be exposed to biohazards and/or hazardous chemicals. The work occasionally includes working with hands in water. The incumbent may be exposed to electrical energy. The nature of the work requires the incumbent to use power and noise producing tools and equipment and drive motorized vehicles daily.

Minimum Qualifications

The minimum qualifications for Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities are the following:
Service Maintenance Trainee
Education and Experience:

  • High school graduation or equivalent; and
  • One year of construction-related experience which includes asphalt and concrete work.
Knowledge:
  • The proper use and care of common hand tools.
  • Basic math including addition, multiplication and division.
  • The preparation and finishing of concrete and the preparation and application of asphalt.
Abilities:
  • Operate power tools and equipment and perform a variety of semi-skilled tasks.
  • Observe safety principles and work in a safe manner.
  • Follow oral and written instructions given in English.
  • Perform basic mathematical calculations and measurements.
  • Work effectively as a member of a crew.
  • Act in a courteous and diplomatic manner with members of the public.
Licenses and Certificates
  • Possession and continued maintenance of a valid California Class C driver's license.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Willingness to wear a uniform.
  • Willingness to perform call-back duty as required.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Possession of a valid California Class A driver's license with air brake endorsement.
  • Completion of training in the following areas: Introduction to Equipment Operation;f Fundamentals of Backhoe, Front-end Loader and Skidsteer Operation; Stormwater Best Management Practices and Customer Service;
Service Maintenance Worker
All of the Minimum Qualifications required for the Service Maintenance Trainee, plus the following:
Education and Experience:
  • High school graduation or equivalent; and
  • One year of construction-related experience, plus six months of experience performing duties comparable to those of the City's Service Maintenance Trainee classification.
Knowledge:
  • Basic techniques, equipment and materials used in the maintenance of equipment and public right of way.
  • Safety procedures for operating equipment and power tools.
Abilities:
  • Work effectively both independently and as a member of a crew.
  • Learn to use basic computer software such as the City’s maintenance management system.
Licenses and Certificates
  • Possession and continued maintenance of a valid Class C driver’s license.
  • Possession and continued maintenance of certification by the International Municipal Signal Association in Work Zone Traffic Control Safety and in Sign and Pavement Marking-Level I by the end of the probationary period.
  • Possession of Forklift Operator Certification in accordance with OSHA standards by the end of the probationary period.
  • Obtaining a valid California Class A driver’s license with air brake endorsements may be required based on operational need as a requirement at the time of hire or at any time during employment.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Willingness to perform on-call duty assignment and call-back work as required.
  • Willingness to wear a uniform.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Completion of training in the following areas: Introduction to Equipment Operation; Fundamentals of Backhoe, Front-end Loader and Skidsteer Operation; Basic Construction Math, Hot-Mix Asphalt (HMA) 101; Introduction to Right of Way Inspection; Stormwater Best Management Practices; Customer Service; and, Introduction to Computer Applications (Word, Outlook and KRONOS).
