CITY OF SANTA CLARITA is Hiring a Newhall Community Center Recreation Leader I / II - PTS Near Santa Clarita, CA

The Newhall Community Center (NCC) has multiple part-time/seasonal (PTS) positions available in the City’s Recreation and Community Services Division working directly with the public, youth, and teens. The center is a fun, customer-service-oriented environment, where you can get to know your community and expand your knowledge and skills to prepare for future careers.Days filled with games and a variety of activities, including sports, arts and crafts, field trips, water games, and more, this is your chance to make a meaningful impact on the lives of the children in our community! Both youth and staff return year after year each summer because of the feeling of tradition, community, and belonging that they experience each year. These positions may work up to 20 hours per week and are based on the needs of the program; Monday – Friday, and some Saturdays. Hours may be increased as needed during summer camp, winter camp, and spring camp programming, as needed. Summer camp runs from June 3 - August 9 between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. After-School and Summer Programs Recreation Leader IDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:• Organizes, plans, and works directly with leadership staff to prepare activities for youth and teens• Supervises and leads youth and teens in activities such as arts and crafts, games, sports, water activities, and outings; attends and supervises youth/teen fieldtrips• Maintains staff/youth and staff/teen safety • Assists in organization, set-up, and clean-up of facility • Assists with decorating bulletin boards • Greets patrons and participants and answers inquiries regarding programs • Effectively addresses issues and concerns with youth and teens as they arise • Maintains various forms, logs, reports, and inventory • Performs first aid and responds to emergencies; reports incidents and accidents; follows and enforces City policies as they relate to the health, behavior, and safety of others• Attends meetings and training sessions • Performs other duties, as directed by Community Services Supervisor, Coordinator, and/or Recreation Leader III/II EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:• High school diploma or GED equivalent• Six-months of paid or volunteer experience in leading and planning activities for youth and teens in a recreation, education, child care program, after-school program, camps, or other relatable setting• Completion of college courses is highly desirable• Bilingual in English/Spanish highly desirable• Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary will be considered

Front Counter Recreation Leader IIRecreation Leader II may include all of the responsibilities of the Recreation Leader I, in addition to the following:DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:• Assists with front counter operations, including greeting participants, answering phones and Community Center emails, and providing program and general information to community members. • Maintains a professional attitude and provide excellent customer service to participants at all times• Utilizes recreation software to register participants for classes and financial transactions. • Tracks supply inventory and maintains accurate records• Creates and posts program flyers • Oversees office work space, maintaining adequate supplies, and coverage of phones and front counter • Assists with various Community Center programs and events, including the summer and afterschool program, classes, special events, etc. • Assists with the training of other part-time staff • Organizes, prioritizes, and follows up on assignments. • Performs other duties, as directed by Community Services Supervisor, Coordinator, and Program SpecialistEDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:• High school diploma or GED equivalent• One year of paid experience in recreation, community services, or other related experience• Experience working with staff and youth in a recreational environment is highly desirable• Bilingual in English/Spanish is highly desirable• Any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities will be consideredKNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: • Ability to act as a role model by displaying positive and courteous behaviors that youth and teens will admire and want to emulate • Ability to maintain awareness of youth and teen’s needs and respond appropriately – • Ability to communicate effectively, tactfully, and positively, both verbally and in writing• Strong team player and the ability to work both independently and as part of a work group • Strong customer service skills and the ability to handle conflict, issues, and concerns with youth and teens as they arise • Ability to observe safety principles, make sound decisions, and solve problems• Strong work ethic, proactive, and the ability to learn quickly• Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and environments, including inclement weather and in a pool.• Ability to work flexible hours• Ability to lift, drag, and push supplies and equipment weighing 25 pounds or more is required occasionallyJOB PERKS AND HIGHLIGHTS: • Make lifetime friendships while working in a fun environment!• Wear casual, comfortable uniforms • Free CPR/First Aid training and certification (City-paid training that will prepare you for emergency situations)• Opportunities to build your resume and skills (especially if you have an interest in teaching, early childhood education, childcare, social work, coaching sports, arts, recreation administration, criminal justice, and/or working for local government.)• Opportunities to advance• Paid sick leave (after 90 days of employment)• Discounts on City activities (ice skating, open gym, swimming and more!)• Cross-training opportunities• Make a difference in the life of a child every day!APPLICATION PROCESS:An online completed City application form is required to apply for this position.
