City Of Santa Clara is Hiring an Electric Utility Electrician Near Santa Clara, CA

The Department - Silicon Valley Power (SVP) SVP currently provides over 40 percent of Santa Clara’s electricity from carbon-free renewable resources. In addition to using green energy from large-scale wind, solar, geothermal and hydroelectric projects outside of the area, SVP employs innovative ways to locally produce electricity by capturing and burning methane gas from a closed city landfill and using power from solar generating systems on city-owned garages and vacant, unusable land.  The Position
 The position of Electric Utility Electrician performs inspections and maintenance on equipment in SVP substations. This equipment includes but is not limited to, power transformers, instrument and control transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, relays and ancillary control systems. SVP substation equipment is rated at 12,000 volts and above. Electric Utility Electricians provide after hours emergency response to events that impact substation equipment.

ONLY THE MOST QUALIFIED CANDIDATES WHO DEMONSTRATE THE BEST COMBINATION OF QUALIFICATIONS IN RELATION TO THE REQUIREMENTS AND DUTIES OF THE POSITION WILL BE INVITED TO TEST OR INTERVIEW. Each position in this classification may not include all the duties listed below, nor do the examples cover all duties that may be performed.Under general supervision:• Performs a variety of skilled electrical work involved in construction, maintenance, and troubleshooting of substations, Supervisory Control Automated Data Analysis (SCADA) systems, communication and traffic signal systems, street lighting systems, automatic water control systems, and other City Electrical facilities;• Installs, maintains and repairs alarm equipment, motors, and switchboard wires;• Maintains, tests, and repairs relays;• Installs and maintains primary and secondary metering equipment;• Installs and maintains well starters and related automatic control equipment;• Installs and maintains electrical substation equipment such as 230 KV, 115 KV, 60 KV, and 12 KV circuit breakers, transformers, capacitor banks, air switches, control wires, and protective relays;• Answers trouble calls concerning substation alarms and traffic signals;• Operates hydraulic aerial devices to perform work inside substations and to replace burned out street and traffic signal lights;• Maintains, repairs and replaces traffic signal standards and associated equipment;• Troubleshoots secondary circuits of 750 volts and under;• Takes readings and keeps records of substations;• Inspects the various areas of substations and grounds, as appropriate, to ensure its safe and efficient operation;• Logs and reports any deficiencies, takes readings, analyzes failures, and takes corrective action to ensure plant safety and reliability;• Performs a variety of skilled electrical and mechanical work related to the distribution and transmission of electrical power; and• Performs other related duties as assigned. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
• Graduation from high school or possession of a G.E.D.;• Status as a journey level electrician, including proof of certification as a journey level electrician; or proof of completion of a formal electrician apprenticeship; or proof of completion of a formal electrician or equivalent training program; and• Experience maintaining high voltage substation equipment, power generation equipment or industrial manufacturing facilities is required.ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTION

Journey level experience maintaining solid state traffic signal equipment.LICENSE
Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license is required at the time of appointment and for the duration of employment. SPECIAL CONDITIONS
• Incumbents of this classification may be required to work shifts, weekends, and odd and unusual hours in the performance of duties, and be available for emergency and/or pre-arranged work whenever called upon.• Incumbents may be required to work in inclement weather.• Incumbents will be required to travel from site to site and work occasionally at a considerable height above the ground. • Applicants appointed to this position must possess normal color vision at time of appointment.• Incumbents of this classification may be subject to drug and/or alcohol testing as mandated by federal regulations.• Must be able to perform all of the essential functions of the job assignment. 
 
Candidates must attain a passing score on each phase of the examination process to qualify for the Eligible List. A department interview will be required prior to appointment.

VETERAN’S PREFERENCE POINTS: This position qualifies for Veteran’s Preference Points. • Fundamentals of electricity and electronics including their application to the operation of high voltage substations, motor control, circuits, traffic signal devices and street lighting• National Electrical Code, California Electrical Safety Orders and CAL OSHA• Techniques, tools and materials of the electrical utility trade, and skill in their use• Applicable safety preparations and first aid practices; and• Knowledge of environmental and safety practices, procedures and standardsAbility to:
• Read and interpret blueprints and electrical diagrams• Perform arithmetic calculations involving multiplication, addition, subtraction, division, decimals and fractions• Safely drive light duty vehicles e.g. pick-up truck, bucket truck;• Train new personnel on work procedures• Direct the activities of Utility Electrician Apprentices and other staff• Maintain accurate and precise written and computerized documents including records, forms and correspondence• Understand and follow written instructions• Understand, follow and provide oral instructions• Deal tactfully and courteously with others• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationship with those contacted in the course of work, including the general public• Walk or stand for extended periods of time and bend, stoop, reach, carry, crawl, climb, and lift as necessary to perform assigned duties• Effectively handle multiple priorities, organize workload, and meet strict deadlines; and• Work in a team-based environment and achieve common goals
