City of Sandpoint is Hiring a Community Garden Coordinator 2024 Near Sandpoint, ID

The principal function of an employee in this class is operational oversight of the Sandpoint community garden site, the plot holders and volunteers for the program. The Community Garden Coordinator's work is performed under the direct supervision of the Recreation Supervisor, but some leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The principal duties of this class are performed in an outdoor environment or other environment that may expose the employee to adverse weather conditions, excessive noise and other outdoor environmental elements.
  • Work with gardeners to ensure that each plot is effectively utilized and maintained through the season.
  • Organize and participate in work parties for the garden.
  • Coordinate ongoing volunteer events to maintain the garden throughout the season.
  • Assist gardeners throughout the season with gardening education and problem solving of all kinds; support gardeners in learning affordable and sustainable gardening practices.
  • Conduct garden inspections during the season; contact gardeners as needed and follow up when necessary.
  • Coordinate with City employees, volunteers and others to prepare, improve and develop gardening sites.
  • Be the overall ambassador and advocate for the garden, the plot holders, and the community.
  • Perform all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures, and safety practices.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Knowledge of:
  • Organic vegetable gardening and or farming in the Pacific Northwest.

Physical Demands:
  • Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions and to communicate effectively in person and on a telephone;
  • Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions, identify plants, facility hazards;
  • Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to reach, grab, use a computer; and
  • Sufficient personal mobility, flexibility, and balance, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to walk, lift and bend. Jobs in this class require performing repetitive motions in fingering and hand/wrist/arm movements. Related job tasks may require, with or without reasonable accommodation, lifting or moving up 15 pounds frequently and 50 pounds occasionally, and stooping, bending, crouching and reaching.
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work of a Community Garden Coordinator.
Special Qualifications
  • Ability to obtain First Aid/CPR/AED certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Ability to pass a background check.
