THE POSITION:
The City is seeking highly qualified candidates to perform a variety of professional engineering work in design, investigation and construction of public works projects. Direction is provided by higher level Public Works management. Technical or functional supervision may also be provided by higher level engineering personnel.
The vacancy may be filled by one of the following job classifications: Associate Engineer or Assistant Engineer. Duties assigned will be dependent upon skill level.

Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills

  • Perform responsible engineering work involving the design of streets, storm drains, building facilities, and other public works projects.
  • Perform engineering calculations and plan checks according to current standards of the engineering profession including (review of site improvement plans, grading and drainage plans, utility plans, erosion control plans, and storm water treatment devices to ensure compliance with applicable state and local laws, City codes and ordinances).
  • Advise engineers, architects, builders, homeowners, and the general public on code and design requirements.
  • Coordinate with applicants to clarify plan check comments.
  • Attend pre-application meetings with applicants, as needed.
  • Perform review of traffic control plans and gathers necessary information from applicants for encroachment permit issuance.
  • Coordinate capital improvement projects from conceptual design, thru bid package preparation, to final construction.
  • Prepare ordinances and related administrative documents as assigned.
  • Work as on-site inspector during construction (as needed) to ensure compliance with standards by private construction contractors performing work on behalf of the City.
  • Discuss and review pertinent information with survey crewmembers; interpret and analyze results of survey work.
  • Collect and analyze engineering-related data and statistical information.
  • Prepare a variety of complex engineering-related reports as assigned.
  • Draft and prepare preliminary and final plans and contracts for public works projects.
  • Respond to a variety of inquiries, complaints and questions from contractors, builders, engineers and the general public.

Minimum qualifications & Requirements

Knowledge of:

  • Principles and practices of engineering as applied to public works.
  • Methods, materials and techniques used in the construction of public works projects.
  • Modern developments, current literature and sources of information regarding engineering.

Ability to:

  • Make complex engineering computations and check, design and prepare engineering plans, studies, profiles and maps.
  • Learn and apply City codes and appropriate State and Federal laws, codes and regulations.
  • Use and care for drafting and surveying instruments.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Type at a speed of 60 net words per minute.
  • Communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

Experience and Training

Associate Engineer: Three years of increasingly responsible engineering experience

Assistant Engineer: One year of engineering experience.

Education
Equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in engineering. Education may be equalized by five years of responsible duties in the engineering field.

License or Certificate:

Possession of a valid California Driver’s License

Engineering in Training (EIT) certificate

  • Retirement: CalPERS Retirement System: 2.5% at 55 Formula for "classic" members (employee pays 10.3% of salary); 2.0% at 62 for new CalPERS members (employee pays 7.75%)
