The Position:
The City of San Bernardino is seeking a service-oriented self-starter able to work in a fast-paced environment responsible for providing medical and technical support in the health care of animals at the city's animal shelters.
The Ideal Candidate:The ideal candidate will have a strong desire to serve the public and improve the lives of both the pets and people who reside in the community by strengthening the human-animal bond. This individual will have excellent listening and communication skills and be a dedicated, reliable and contributing member of a high performing team along with the ability to deal with unexpected challenges quickly, calmly, and efficiently.
About the City:
The City of San Bernardino is a community rich in history and cultural diversity. Influences of Native Americans, Mexican settlers, and Spanish missionaries can still be seen throughout the City today. From 1810 to the present, San Bernardino has been recognized for its scenic beauty and strategic location. Today, the City of San Bernardino serves as the county seat and is the largest city in the County of San Bernardino with a population of 222,203.

Click here to view the job description for Registered Veterinary Technician.Education and Experience:Bachelor’s degree in veterinary medicine, veterinary tech, or other closely related field.; AND one (1) year experience of handling and working with animals preferred; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:A valid California driver’s license is required.Registered Veterinary Technician Certificate is required.Euthanasia Certificate preferred.Physical Requirements and Work Environment: The employee frequently works in veterinary setting or shelter. The employee is often exposed to dangerous, injured, or diseased animals. The employee is frequently exposed to wet or humid conditions; fumes or airborne articles; toxic or caustic chemicals; and zoonotic and other communicable diseases. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud within confined areas. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to manipulate, handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, walk, sit, talk, and hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

City Benefits:

The City offers an attractive compensation and benefit package, that includes:
  • Retirement – Participation in the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS). Classic members with less than 6 months separation: CalPERS 2% at 55, single highest year plan. New members, CalPERS 2% at 62, three highest year average plan.
  • Health Insurance – Monthly contribution of $715.00 (Employee Only), $1,377.00 (Employee plus one), or $1,841.00 (Employee plus Family) for health, dental and vision premiums. Eligible employees who waive all medical, dental, vision, supplemental life, and supplemental AD&D benefits will receive an annual “Health Insurance Waiver Stipend” of $4,000.00 every first paycheck of December.
  • Leave – Vacation beginning at 80 hours after one year, 96 hours of sick leave annually, 13 holidays, plus 18 hours of floating holiday time. 
  • Administrative Leave - 40 hours
  • Life & Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance – The City provides Term Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance.
  • Other – Optional Deferred Compensation Plan, flexible benefits plan, pre-tax childcare plan, employee assistance program, and all other benefits which are received by Management/Confidential employees of the City per Memorandum of Understanding.
