The Position:Under general supervision accomplishes a variety of duties in the protection of life and property, to include law enforcement, crime prevention, investigation and public assistance. San Bernardino Police Officers enjoy a variety of different duty assignments and work experiences that may not be available at other agencies. If you are interested in a career in law enforcement but have NOTcompleted the California Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Basic Academy Course OR obtained a Basic P.O.S.T. Course Waiver you will need to apply for the Law Enforcement Trainee (LET) position.

Education, Training and Experience:

  • A high school or G.E.D. equivalent
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Successful completion of the California Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Basic Academy Course or a Basic P.O.S.T. Course Waiver.
Verification of California P.O.S.T. Basic Academy or Basic P.O.S.T Course Waiver completion must be submitted with application.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:

  • Possession of a valid Class "C" California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the City's vehicle insurance policy. For out-of-state applicants, a valid driver's license is required. A valid Class "C: California driver's license must be obtained within ten (10) days of appointment (CA Vehicle Code 12405c).
  • Free of any felony convictions.
  • A citizen of the United States or permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship.
  • Fingerprinted for purposes of search of local, state, and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record.
  • Of good moral character, as determined by a thorough background investigation.
  • Found to be free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition which might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer.
City Benefits:
The City offers an attractive compensation and benefit package, that includes:
  • Retirement – Participation in the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS). Employees hired prior to September 1, 2011, shall receive a 3% at 50 retirement benefit. Classic members hired on or after September 1, 2011, shall receive a 3% at 55 retirement benefit. New members, hired between January 1, 2013, and December 31, 2015, shall receive a 2. 7% at 57 retirement benefit in accordance with the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA). New members, hired on or after January 1, 2016, shall receive a 2.5% at 57 retirement benefit in accordance with PEPRA. 
  • Health Insurance – Monthly contribution of $701.00 (Employee Only), $1,377.00 (Employee plus one), or $1,841.00 (Employee plus Family) for health, dental and vision premiums. Eligible employees who waive all medical, dental, vision, supplemental life, and supplemental AD&D benefits will receive an annual “Health Insurance Waiver Stipend” of $3,500.00 every first paycheck of December.
  • Leave – Vacation beginning at 80 hours after one year, 96 hours of sick leave annually, 13 holidays, plus 18 hours of floating holiday time.
  • Life & Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance – The City provides Term Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance.
