The Position

The ideal candidate will provide customer service to patrons at the Circulation Desk checking materials in and out, issuing new and replacement library cards, explaining library policies and procedures to patrons, and answering questions regarding services offered at library branches located throughout the city.

The incumbent should possess a strong passion for library services and an understanding of library operations. They should have excellent organizational skills, the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment, and commitment to providing exceptional library service to the community.

Influences of Native Americans, Mexican settlers, and Spanish missionaries can still be seen throughout the City today. From 1810 to the present, San Bernardino has been recognized for its scenic beauty and strategic location. Today, the City of San Bernardino serves as the county seat and is the largest city in the County of San Bernardino with a population of 222,203.
The incumbent will work a schedule as follows:
Monday & Tuesdays 9:30 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. & Wednesday & Saturday 7:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Schedule is subject to change based on the needs of the Department.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:
Associate of Arts Degree in Library Science AND one (1) year of responsible paraprofessional library experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:
A valid State driver’s license is required.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
Work is done in a standard library environment with minimal physical labor and exposure to adverse conditions. Will be required to provide customer service and interact with other staff, the public, and various public entities.

Supplemental Information

City Benefits (FULL-TIME VACANCY ONLY):

The City offers an attractive compensation and benefit package, that includes:
  • Retirement – Participation in the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS). Classic members with less than 6 months separation: CalPERS 2% at 55, single highest year plan. New members, CalPERS 2% at 62, three highest year average plan.
  • Health Insurance – Monthly contribution of $715.00 (Employee Only), $1,377.00 (Employee plus one), or $1,841.00 (Employee plus Family) for health, dental and vision premiums. Eligible employees who waive all medical, dental, vision, supplemental life, and supplemental AD&D benefits will receive an annual “Health Insurance Waiver Stipend” of $3,500.00 every first paycheck of December.
  • Leave
    • Vacation - 80 hours annually, accrued bi-weekly; available for use after one (1) year.
    • Sick Leave - 96 hours annually, accrued bi-weekly; available for use after ninety (90) days.
    • 13 holidays, plus 18 hours of floating holiday time.
  • Life & Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance – The City provides Term Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance.
  • Other – Optional Deferred Compensation Plan, flexible benefits plan, pre-tax childcare plan, employee assistance program, and all other benefits which are received by Management/Confidential employees of the City per Memorandum of Understanding.

THE CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO IS AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER

Health Insurance - Eligible to receive a City contribution of $715.00 (Employee only), $1,377.00 (Employee 1) or $1,841.00 (Employee Family) to help offset health, dental and vision premiums. Retirement for New Members - For employees hired 1/1/2013 or later and who are not a member of the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) or a reciprocal agency as of 12/31/12, or those who have been separated from a public agency which contracts with CalPERS or a reciprocal agency for six months or more, the retirement benefit shall be 2% @ 62; 3 year final compensation. New members will be obligated to pay 50% of the “normal cost” of their retirement benefits as required by State law.
