City of Salem is Hiring an Electric Line Technician II Near Salem, VA

General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate skilled technical work assisting in the construction, maintenance, and operation of an electric distribution system, installing, maintaining, and repairing overhead and underground power lines and related facilities, operating equipment, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Electric Line Crew Leader.

Essential Functions

  • Assists with planning and initiating projects; installs, maintains, and repairs overhead and underground high and low voltage electric transmission and distribution lines and related facilities.
  • Supervises and assists with training assigned staff; establishes and ensures compliance with OSHA and customer safety requirements.
  • Operates a variety of utility vehicles and equipment including line truck, bucket truck, digger, boom, compressor, test equipment, and tools, etc.; uses hot line equipment and tools.
  • Climbs poles; installs hardware and fuse transformers; pulls wire; sets towers and poles.
  • Installs and maintains transformers and other equipment; maintains existing high and low voltage lines.
  • Assists with installation, maintenance, and repair of street lights, traffic signals, and recreation facility lighting.
  • Trims trees, undergrowth, and other obstructions away from power lines and transformers.
  • Installs, maintains, and tests fiber optic cables.
  • Installs new electric services and electric service upgrades for utility customers; performs required line work on energized and de-energized circuits.
  • Checks voltage, rotation, and troubleshoots electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Installs and replaces meters and anti-tampering devices; installs temporary power hook ups.
  • Checks and replaces cables as required.
  • Sets up work zones to meet local and Federal safety standards to ensure protection of employees and the general public.
  • Transports, loads, and unloads tools, materials, and equipment to and from work sites.
  • Takes inventory and stocks supplies and equipment; cleans, greases, inspects, and performs maintenance checks on equipment; verifies the condition of all vehicles, equipment, and tools provided for use in the performance of work.
  • May serve as Lead Technician in the absence of the Electric Line Crew Leader.

Special Requirements

Special Requirements
Obtain Flagging, Forklift, CPR, and First Aid certifications within six months of hire. Completion of an approved electrical apprenticeship program within six months of hire. Valid commercial driver's license in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Education & Experience
High school diploma or GED and minimal experience in electric line construction and maintenance, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Some knowledge of the practices, methods, equipment, materials and tools used in the construction and maintenance of electric distribution and transmission systems; some knowledge of the occupational hazards connected with the work and the safety precautions to be taken; general knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; skill in the operation of equipment to which assigned; ability to follow oral directions; ability to observe safety rules and regulations; ability to climb poles; ability to set poles, string wire, and perform related work; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, other utilities, customers, and the general public.

Physical Requirements
This work requires the regular exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and reaching with hands and arms, frequently requires pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires sitting; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm's length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to vibration, frequently requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles and occasionally requires exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a very loud noise location (e.g. jack hammer work, garbage recycle plant).

Pay: $62,769.30 - $100,430.88 per year
