City of Roanoke, Virginia is Hiring a Maintenance Technician II - Park Management Near Courtland, VA

The City of Roanoke is seeking a Maintenance Technician II to serve with the Athletic Field Maintenance Crew for Parks and Recreation. Athletic Field Maintenance supervises and participates in the work of a crew of highly skilled Maintenance Technicians and Seasonal Maintenance Workers engaged in a variety of turf and general park maintenance at city wide athletic fields. Performs skilled work in the operation of several types of motorized equipment used in athletic field maintenance (Infield Pro, Steiner, Zero-Turn Mowers, Walk Behind Mowers, Field Marking Equipment) as well as some small gas powered two-stroke equipment (weedeaters, edgers, backpack blowers). This position also has a role in the operation of heavy and light equipment during snow removal. Assists with tournaments, special events, snow removal and other emergency tasks as needed; including some nights and weekends. High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) and one to three years of experience and/or training in athletic field maintenance and management or equivalent combination of education and experience. A Class B Commercial Driver License is preferred but the ability to obtain a Class B CDL learners permit and license within 12 months of hiring is a minimum. Possessing a Registered Technician Spraying license and a Fertilizer Applicator Certification are preferred but the ability to obtain all three within 18 months is required.

This is a non exempt position. SUMMARY 
Performs skilled work in the maintenance of facilities and/or equipment and in the operation of motorized equipment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES may include the following depending on area of assignment. Other duties may be assigned.
Operates tractor trailer or other heavy construction equipment
Operates street sweeper, excavator, bulldozer, backhoe, heavy front-end loader, crane and chipper, large motor grader in leveling ground surfaces and street/construction repair
Services and makes minor repairs and adjustments on equipment
When not operating heavy equipment, operates lighter equipment or trains other operators
Operates heavy and light equipment in snow removal
Operates truck, including automatic and manual transmission
Inspects equipment for proper safety and ensures that truck is equipped with all necessary equipment for the day's assignment 
May perform inspection of playgrounds and associated equipment
Maintains accurate log sheets, checklists and pre-trip sheets
Performs major and minor cleaning work on storm drain systems
Repairs catch basin boxes with concrete and brick and/or blocks
Performs work in the resurfacing of concrete walkways (floor polishing) in city buildings.
Performs some major and all minor motor repairs and replacement work such as: cleaning and replacing spark plugs, installing radiator hose, and packing water pumps; refacing valves and seats, grinding, assembling, and adjusting them; installing rings and bearings and making proper adjustments; and overhauling/repairing carburetors and clutches, brakes, ignition and fuel systems, transmissions, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies, hydraulic system components including pumps and cylinders; and tuning motors 
Makes repairs and renovations to fields and grounds including mowing, mulching, aeration, grading, seeding, and sodding
Assists with special events, snow removal and other emergency tasks, including some nights and weekends, as needed
May be responsible for fabrication, maintenance, and installation of traffic control, pavement markings and barricade signage according to City guidelines and uniformity.
May require some experience and knowledge of computer graphic software and equipment used for fabrication and installation of signs and markings
Knowledge of pertinent rules and regulations, guidelines, safety orders, departmental operating procedures and safety regulations sufficient to insure that work is performed in compliance with applicable law. 
Enforces sound safety and housekeeping practices.
Follows safety rules/procedures; avoid known hazards in the work environment.
Reviews safety procedures before beginning each job with known hazards.
Safety first. Places avoidance of injury or property damage above all other job requirements.
Follows established safety procedures.
May be required to wear some type of respiratory protection in the performance of their duties
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES 
May supervise crew in the absence of Maintenance Technician III or Maintenance Technician IV.SUMMARY
 Participates in the work of a crew engaged in a variety of athletic field and turf grass maintenance, trash removal, and general park landscape maintenance. Performs skilled work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of several types of motorized equipment or maintenance of facilities and/or equipment
 SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES This position reports to a Maintenance Tech IV for daily assignments and will on occasion assist with the supervision of part-time staff or volunteers as needed. Supplemental Information
