Description

The City of Richmond’s Department of Justice Services is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the position of Social Casework Technician. This position is responsible for overseeing and providing guidance to youth mandated by the courts to participate in community service hours. As assigned, work may include: providing guidance, positive reinforcement, behavior management, transportation, and all documentation of community service tasks to include, but not limited to supervision of youth referred to the community service program, actively engaging community partners, and conducting background check paperwork, collecting and compiling data; collecting client information and maintaining records; attending meetings and informational programs; and networking with other agencies to obtain information and client resources.

Supervision Exercised/Received:
Exercised: This classification typically does not supervise other employees.
Received: This classification typically reports to a first line supervisor or manager
Note: Other reporting relationships may apply.

Duties include but are not limited to

  • Providing constant eyesight supervision with juvenile offenders while on the work site
  • Providing transportation for weekly/weekend community service program participants
  • Receiving/monitoring all juveniles reporting for community service when scheduled
  • Documenting case/progress notes on all participants through the City of Richmond Department of Justice Services data management system
  • Documenting all juvenile activities to include Serious Incident Reports
  • Engaging with the Court Service Unit partnering task i.e. Case management, Referrals, and other related duties.
  • Additional duties as assigned such as assisting with all community programs.
This position is considered Essential, which means that the incumbent is required to work when the City is closed due to public emergencies, critical or hazardous conditions, or inclement weather.

This individual may be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, or on-call, as needed.

Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses

TYPICAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: These are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.
Knowledge (some combination of the following):
  • Demonstrated knowledge of supervising juveniles in a community setting
  • De-escalation skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of managing diverse populations and genders
  • Above average knowledge of areas in the Greater Richmond community
  • Knowledge of a variety of mental health diagnoses
Skills (some combination of the following):
  • Case management
  • Motivational interviewing
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral/written communication, including presentations.
  • Experience with software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook and administrative and clerical procedures such as word processing, managing files and records.
Abilities (some combination of the following):
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of individuals.
  • Schedule and manage workloads to meet deadlines.
  • Manage time effectively and prioritize.
  • Work effectively with a diverse population.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • One year of relevant work experience
  • One year of specialized vocational training or equivalent work experience
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification.
LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record and a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License within 30 days of hire
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • One year of relevant work experience
  • One year of specialized vocational training or equivalent work experience
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification.

Bachelor’s degree

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraints. The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly work with one's fingers, talk, hear, see, and use repetitive motions; frequently walk; and occasionally stoop, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, push, pull, lift, grasp, and feel. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be sedentary (exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects) but may differ based on area of focus. The working conditions may contain environmental hazards, depending on area of focus.
