The City of Richmond, Department of Parks, Recreation, and Community Facilities is looking for a Maintenance Technician - Trails. This position works to keep all City of Richmond Trails accessible, presentable, and safe for public use. The City of Richmond has over 40 miles of trails and greenways. These trails are extraordinarily popular and heavily-used. Keeping bridges, staircases, signage, and other areas maintained allow the public to continue to safely recreate on our trails. The Department of Parks Recreation and Community Facilities is seeking a highly qualified candidate to fill the position of Maintenance Technician (Trails). This job class maintains and makes repairs for the City of Richmond’s parks, specialized equipment and facilities through the performance of skilled labor and technical work.
Incumbents will serve as crew members under the guidance of Labor Crew Chief and Tech Senior. Work may include assessing and identifying repair needs and recommending action; providing maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and parts; operating assigned light and heavy equipment, machinery, or shop equipment; maintaining records and inventory; recommending equipment and supply purchases; maintaining cleanliness of work areas, tools and equipment; ensuring safe use of hazardous materials and chemicals; adhering to all safety policies and procedures.

Duties include but are not limited to

Duties to include but are not limited to:

  • Operating heavy equipment, power and hand tools
  • Park maintenance may include mowing, weed eating, table, bench & shelter repairs & maintenance, ball field maintenance, snow removal, fence repair & installation, and general landscaping, trail construction and maintenance, volunteer coordination, tree care, sawyer work, rigging, truck and trailer hauling, trash, litter and recycling removal, and basic carpentry
  • Facilities maintenance including cleaning, repairs, and painting
  • Determining repairs necessary on faulty equipment and making repairs as needed or notifying proper maintenance personnel to handle repairs
  • Assisting maintenance personnel in other classifications, such as plumbers and electricians, in performing their duties
  • Preparing and presenting reports, maintaining work order logs
**City of Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities employees who work in this position are considered essential personnel and may be required to work beyond scheduled hours, during inclement weather, and during declare emergencies.**

Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate technical information and requirements in a clear, accurate and understandable manner
  • Ability to recognize conditions that may jeopardize personal, crew, or the public’s safety
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience using Microsoft Office to include Excel, Outlook and Word
  • Demonstrates skills in timely, accurate and excellent record keeping
  • Basic familiarity with City of Richmond Parks and Facilities
  • Ability to problem solve, prioritize tasks and find creative solutions in stressful environments
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Requires high school or GED or specialized vocational training.
  • Requires one year of experience.
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification.
  • Requires valid state driver's license
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Degree in Park and Recreation or associated field.
