Description

The City of Richmond seeks dynamic, enthusiastic, and hardworking people to join its team as a Librarian, Youth Services for the Richmond Public Library. The incumbent will be a self-motivated individual who is an excellent communicator and listener, team player, problem solver, and most importantly, exudes good customer service. Selected candidates will join a dynamic team of individuals focused on providing excellent, prompt, and accurate services to both external and internal customers while achieving the following mission: Inform, Enrich, Empower

The incumbents are responsible for working with diverse groups within the community and providing exceptional customer service by assisting patrons with the use of emerging technologies and access to library resources. This position will require some evening and weekend scheduling on a rotating basis.

Duties include but are not limited to

  • Prepares, coordinates, plans, and facilitates programs and activities.
  • Promotes and markets programs and activities.
  • Prepares and writes various reviews, reports, and other documents.
  • Performs circulation duties.
  • Assists library users with common computer hardware and software problems.
  • Conducts outreach, represents library at various community events, and promotes library services in the community.
  • Assists library users with technology, reference, and readers advisory questions.
  • Presents computer, electronic resource, and Internet training for the public.
  • Assists library users with common computer hardware and software problems.
  • Assists with collection development/maintenance.
  • Prepares periodic statistical reports.
  • Develops brochures and fliers for programs.
  • Participates in team decision-making, staff development and training.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

This position is considered an Essential Personnel, which means that the incumbent is required to work when the City is closed due to public emergencies, critical or hazardous conditions or inclement weather
.

Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Typical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: These are a representative sample; position assignments may vary; not an inclusive list.

The incumbent has considerable knowledge of routine library functions, policies, practices, classification systems such as the Dewey Decimal System, and circulation functions. Greater emphasis in the following areas is integral to success; children's developmental stages, STEAM activities, computer programs such as Microsoft Office Suite. Integrated Library Systems, electronic databases and related software applications. Must have strong mastery of English composition, spelling, and grammar, general knowledge of current and classic literature, especially children's genre, and overall subjects held by the library.

The individual can demonstrate skills of excellent customer service. Assisting patrons, communicating with various internal and external departments. Working with youth pre-school to middle school, performance and keeping children's attention, marketing and promoting special programs. Must be able to plan, coordinate, develop, implement, and facilitate special activities and programs. Preparing announcements and updating library website and social media communications (Instagram, Facebook, NextDoor). Researching and keeping current on early literature best practices. Teaching, reading stories to children, troubleshooting youth challenges. Using library programs as tools for reference or information questions. Using various office equipment such as a computers, printers, laminators, etc. Writing, creating, and editing various reports, story scripts, and other documents. Strong oral and written communication.

This individual can demonstrate the ability to have an interest in library culture as learning environments for all levels, work with children and adults with a wide range of abilities, serve the public, and speak publicly.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Master’s degree in library science from an ALA accredited library school
  • Two years of public library experience
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification
LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be eligible and able to obtain Librarian’s Professional Certification through the Commonwealth of Virginia within one year of time.
PREFFERED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Excellent customer service, enthusiasm, energy and interpersonal skills.
  • In-depth experience with desktops, laptops, tablets, eBooks’ readers, smart phones, and video equipment.
  • Experience developing system wide programs and training staff in new subject matters.

The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly work with one's fingers, talk, hear, see, and use repetitive motions; frequently walk; and occasionally stoop, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, push, pull, lift, grasp, and feel.
