City of Richmond (CA) is Hiring a Police Officer - Lateral Near Richmond, VA

The City of Richmond Police Department is accepting applications for Police Officer - Lateral.
The purpose of the class is to execute general duty police work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances. This class is responsible for patrolling the city, responding to citizen calls, conducting preliminary investigation activities, and maintaining police records. This class works according to set procedures under general supervision.
  • Patrolling assigned city jurisdiction for traffic and other violations utilizing a variety of means of transportation including patrol car, motorcycle, bicycle, and horse
  • Making traffic stops and intervening in other criminal activity
  • Conducting general field services, including monitoring police radio and responding to citizen calls and complaints
  • Obtaining and issuing warrants
  • Marking and packaging evidence
  • Processing crime scenes
  • Investigating potential arson cases
  • Providing surveillance
  • Interviewing suspects and witnesses, and following-up with victims
  • Fingerprinting and photographing suspects
  • Conducting computer-generated searches to gather information on suspects
  • Preparing for and participating in prosecution of cases in court
  • Interacting with City and community agencies and groups
  • Responding to citizen calls, complaints and requests for information
  • Maintaining case files, data and preparing regular reports
  • Other duties as assigned when needed

Successful completion of an interview, thorough background investigation, to include a polygraph exam, physical and drug/alcohol screening, is required. Please note that the Police Department background process may take up to 60-90 days. An applicant disqualified from the Police background process may reapply a year after disqualification.
Must have met criteria for previous Career Development level for Police Recruit. Requires one year of experience as a sworn Law Enforcement Officer. The preferred candidate will currently be certified by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services as a Law Enforcement Officer.
In order to qualify for a waiver of any portion of Basic Training, there are 2 requirements that must be met:
 
Option 1- 

  • The individual must have at least thirty-six (36) months of certified experience prior to separation
And
  • has been separated from such employment less than twenty-four (24) months.
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of basic mathematics; English language; and capacity to learn to operate technical equipment such as police computers, radios, radar devices and cameras; firearms. Skills diffusing hostile situations; reading, interpreting and applying codes, rules, regulations, laws, departmental policies, procedures, principles, and practices of law enforcement; driving in normal as well as adverse conditions; navigating with a map and GPS; writing reports clearly and concisely; with interpersonal communication; communication in writing and verbally. Abilities problem solving; exhibiting a calm temperament and maturity; following standard procedures and established practices to resolve problems; exhibiting compassion and respect; handling stressful situations; respecting authority; following orders; making timely decisions under stress; exercising discretion, good judgment, and good decision-making; working with a diverse public in a courteous and respectful manner.
 MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
  • High school or General Education Diploma (GED). 
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification.
 LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • US citizenship
  • Must possess a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License.
  • The selected candidate must be in possession of a valid Law Enforcement Certification from the Department of Criminal Justice Service.

 PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS:
Physical and dexterity refers to the requirement for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
 
Requires medium to heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and involves exerting between 20 to 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on a occasional basis.
 
 ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS:
 Environmental hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.
 
 The job may risk exposure to bright/dim light, dusts and pollen, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, animals/wildlife, fumes and/or noxious odors, traffic, moving machinery, heights, disease/pathogens, explosives, and violence.
 
 SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
 Sensory ability refers to hearing, sight, touch, taste, and smell required by the job.
 
 The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception.
