City of Republic is Hiring a Meter Technician Near Republic, MO

*The entire range of pay for this position is posted. Typical starting pay will be at the beginning of the range, depending on qualifications.*

Primary Purpose

Performs meter reading and coordinates the installation, replacement, repair, and maintenance of water meter utilities in the City’s distribution system. Works with the Finance Department’s Utility Division on work orders, meter routes, and shut off schedules.

Supervision

Under the general supervision of the Lead Meter Technician and direct supervision of the Operations Manager.

  1. Reading of meters for billing utilities on established meter cycles
  2. Schedules meter reading route cycles in a multiple cycle meter reading system.
  3. Assists with shut offs and work orders when not reading cycles.
  4. Assists in planning, directing, and scheduling the installation or replacement of water meter utilities trough the change out program.
  5. Assists in the work of employees engaged in the repair and maintenance of meter utilities of the water system.
  6. Keeps manual and automated records and makes reports of all work completed.
  7. Works with private contractors and members of other City departments.
  8. Assists public regarding problems and complaints about the water meter system.
  9. Helps coordinate the use of City equipment for the installation or repair of water meters.
  10. Keeps inventory of meters and other meter equipment.
  11. Performs necessary tasks involved with monitoring and maintaining the water meter equipment. 
  12. Deals effectively and courteously with fellow employees and the public.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned.

Important Duties

  1. Attends in-service training sessions or other training sessions deemed appropriate by supervisor or department head.
  2. Maintains a neat and orderly work area.
  3. Maintains appropriate supplies for assigned area.

Education & Experience

  • Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.
  • Previous professional experience as a Meter Technician or similar preferred. 
  • Previous municipal government experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Must have the ability to plan, schedule, and lead in the construction, repair, and maintenance of water meter utilities excavations in streets, alleys, sidewalks, and on public or private property; Must have the ability to read work orders and be able to maintain manual and computerized records of replacement work and prepare report; Working knowledge of modern office procedures, ability to operate meter reading software along with computers, copiers, FAX machines, etc. Answer phones as needed; Must be able to memorize and retain information; Must be able to effectively communicate through written and verbal skills; Must have good time management skills; Must have good cognitive and analytical skills; Must be able to handle stressful situations; Must be able to quickly assess or judge situations and make decisions under pressure in areas of responsibility.

Licensing/Certification Requirements

  • Must possess a valid Missouri State Driver’s License.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain within first year of employment either a Distribution System I or a Class D Water Treatment Certification. Both is preferred.

Miscellaneous Requirements

  • May be required to work a variety of shifts including nights, weekends, or holidays.
  • Subject to emergency call-in.
  • Must be a dependable person due to the small size of the work force.
  • Will be subject to random substance abuse testing.

Physical Demands

Performs bending, squatting, crawling, twisting, kneeling, and reaching to ground level and overhead; Must be able to reach, grip and hold; Must be able to walk and stand for prolonged periods of time; Must be able to lift 50 pounds above their head; Must be able to push, pull and carry 50 pounds.

Work Environment

Both indoor and outdoor working environments with exposure to dust and pollen, toxic fumes, chemicals or smoke, insects & various wildlife, contagious diseases, electrical and mechanical hazards associated with equipment, extreme noise; Subject to variety of extreme weather condition; Susceptible to safety hazards associated with working in and around high traffic volume; Works in confined places and awkward positions.

Tools & Equipment

Computer, I-Pad, meter reading software and equipment, locator, GPS units, pick-up truck, generator, various hand tools.
