Primary Purpose

Assists in the general beautification of City gardens and lawns, including, but not limited to mowing, trimming, pruning, mulching, raking, and weeding. Waters and fertilizes plants and lawns as needed. 

Supervision

Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Maintenance Superintendent and Maintenance Superintendent, and daily oversight of the Parks Horticulturalist.

1. Assists in the maintenance, renovation, and development of City-owned outdoor spaces.
2. Plants and/or transplants a wide variety of flowers, shrubs, plants, and trees.
3. Assists with maintenance and oversight of the City’s gardens, greenhouses, and related community programming. 
4. Operates light duty maintenance equipment such as a zero-turn mower and a tractor equipped with front end loader. Follows safety procedures and guidelines. 
5. Assists Parks and Recreation Department during times of special events.
6. Deals effectively and courteously with fellow employees and the public.
7. Performs other duties as assigned.

1. Attends meetings and training sessions as deemed appropriate by supervisor or department head.
2. Maintains appropriate supplies for assigned area.
3. Maintains neat and orderly work area.

Education & Experience

Must have basic knowledge of zero turn mowers and grounds maintenance.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

General knowledge of landscaping, grass, and tree care. Organizational/planning skills. Verbal and written communication skills. Basic Computer skills. Ability to troubleshoot, modify, and maintain maintenance equipment. Must be able to memorize and retain information. Must have good time management skills. Must have good cognitive and analytical skills. Must be able to handle stressful situations. Must be able to quickly judge and assess situations. Must be able to make decisions under pressure in areas of responsibility. Must possess manual ability to operate a computer.

Special Requirements

• Must possess a valid Missouri State Driver’s License.
• Must be at least 16 years of age.

Miscellaneous Requirements

• May be required to work a variety of shifts including nights, weekends, or holidays.
• Must be a dependable person due to the small size of the work force. 
• May be subject to random substance abuse testing.

Physical Demands

Performs bending, squatting, crawling, twisting, kneeling, and reaching to ground level and overhead; Must be able to reach, grip and hold; Must be able to lift 50 pounds above their head; Must be able to push, pull and carry 60 pounds.
