ABOUT OUR JOB

The Park Ranger Supervisor oversees and directs the activities of the Park Ranger Division within the Parks and Recreation Department.

This role involves planning, coordinating, and managing daily operations and requires specialized knowledge to enforce city ordinances governing the use of parks and recreational facilities.

The Supervisor is responsible for handling the most challenging park ranger issues, using discretionary authority to resolve matters effectively.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

• Supervises, trains, evaluates, and oversees an operational unit of Park Rangers.
• Assists and recommends policy and operating procedures for the unit.
• Interprets and applies policy and regulatory guidance.
• Assists in the selection of staff and creates goals and objectives for the division.
• Reviews daily patrol logs, maintenance observation reports, incident reports, or other required reports as necessary.
• Analyzes complex problems and recommends effective solutions with other management.
• Handles escalated situations and issues warnings when necessary within the scope of responsibility.
• Maintains a positive rapport with the Police Department and other staff and members of the public to ensure seamless interactions.

The Park Ranger Supervisor will also actively participate in field duties characteristic of Park Rangers.

Qualifications :

• Associate’s degree in a related field and four (4) years of experience in Parks and Recreation, security operations, law enforcement, or related field including one year in a supervisory capacity.
• A combination of education and experience deemed appropriate to fulfill the role and responsibilities of this position will be considered.

Certifi cates, Licenses, Registrations :

• Must possess a valid driver’s license or ability to obtain one within 30 days from the date of hire.
• Must possess or obtain a Security License issued by the Rapid City Police Department within 6 months or an acceptable amount of time as determined by the hiring authority.
• Must complete continued education as required by position needs.

Other Skills / Abilities :

To be successful, applicants should also possess the following

• Experience supervising and training a team and working with other supervisors toward a common goal.
• Conflict resolution experience.
• Knowledge of law enforcement, ordinances, rules, and regulations related to public use of parks and facilities.
• First aid and / or CPR experience.
• Ability to de-escalate situations and exercise good judgment in stressful or emergency situations.
• Operate computers, related software, or equipment to carry out assigned work duties.
• Maintain effective communication and working relationships with the public and other employees.
