The Equipment Maintenance Technicians I, II, and III are responsible for providing skilled mechanical service, repair, and maintenance for City vehicles and equipment, under the direction of the Street Division.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 
Equipment Mechanic I: 
  • Performs entry-level maintenance and servicing of automobiles; including preventative and light-duty equipment engine, uses tools and equipment; working independently, with minimal supervision.
  • Prioritized assignments in order to complete work in a safe, timely, and efficient manner.
  • Cleans and applies lubricants, changes oil and filters, and conducts routine service on light-duty engines such as, but not limited to: mowers, tractors, light and medium-duty trucks, and earth moving equipment including stationary and gasoline-powered equipment components and small engines. Services to include: tires, lights, hoses, belts, general accessories, and bodywork and painting; tests completed work to ensure proper performance of equipment repaired.
  • Completes appropriate work-flow reporting; maintains accurate service maintenance records; maintains and cleans shop area, equipment, and tools to ensure they are kept is safe and usable conditions at all times; monitors shop supply levels and notifies appropriate personnel of replenishment needs.
 
Equipment Mechanic II:  in addition to the above duties:
  • Performs testing, inspection, and diagnosis on gasoline and diesel vehicles and equipment to accurately identify and repair issues.
  • Tunes and repairs basic engine components of gasoline engines including fuel injection systems, automatic transmissions; air conditioning systems, suspension systems, tires, hydraulic and air brakes, electrical and ignition systems, drive train and manual transmissions, clutches and rear axle assemblies, cooling and heating, fuel and exhaust systems, other engine components.
  • Performs metal fabrication work and welding with torch and/or gas and arc welder.
  • Provides guidance and mentoring to lower-level team members.
 
Equipment Mechanic III:  in addition to the above duties:
  • Tunes and repairs basic engine components of diesel engines including fuel injection systems, automatic transmissions; air conditioning systems, suspension systems, tires, hydraulic and air brakes, electrical and ignition systems, drive train and manual transmissions, clutches and rear axle assemblies, cooling and heating, fuel and exhaust systems, other engine components.
  • Performs advanced troubleshooting and diagnostics to investigate malfunctions and mechanical defects. 
  • Performs needed repairs ensuring that clearances, fittings, adjustments, settings, replacements, and repairs are correct and precise in accordance with existing technical manuals, specifications, or instructions. 
  • Repairs, overhauls, or rebuilds engines and does other major repairs of systems such as diesel, gasoline, and other types of internal combustion engines, automatic and standard transmissions, heavy-duty drive line systems, and hydraulic utility systems and controls.
  • Assists with new employee orientation and training; provides guidance and oversight for entry-level team members.

Qualifications, Certificates, Licenses: 
Equipment Mechanic I: 
  • Two-year vocational/technical certificate in operation and repair of gasoline powered vehicles and equipment; or 
  • Three years experience in the repair of gasoline-powered vehicles and equipment, or 
  • A combination of education and experience deemed appropriate to fulfill the role and responsibilities of this position will be considered.
  • Qualifies for Entry Level ASE certification, or comparable within one year of hire. 
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
Equipment Mechanic II:
  • Two-year vocational/technical certificate in the repair of gasoline or diesel-powered vehicles and equipment and two years of related experience; or 
  • Five years experience in the repair of gasoline-powered vehicles and equipment or any such combination of education, and closely related experience, or
  • A combination of education and experience deemed appropriate to fulfill the role and responsibilities of this position will be considered. 
  • Must possess a valid South Dakota Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A
Equipment Mechanic III: 
  • Two-year vocational/technical certificate in the repair of gasoline-powered vehicles and equipment and diesel engine repair and two years related experience; or
  • Five years experience in the repair of gasoline-powered vehicles and equipment, at least three years of which include repair of diesel-powered heavy equipment, hydraulics, welding, or 
  • A combination of education and experience deemed appropriate to fulfill the role and responsibilities of this position will be considered.
  • Must possess a valid South Dakota Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A
