City of Raleigh North Carolina is Hiring an Assistant Director of Active Adults Centers Near Raleigh, NC

The Active Adults program serves thousands of adults in the Raleigh area each year. Activities include various educational seminars and workshops, exercise and wellness classes, arts, clubs, sports-related activities, overnight and day trips, and more. The Active Adults program also operates three centers: Five Points Center for Active Adults, Anne Gordon Center for Active Adults and the Walnut Terrace Neighborhood Center. This position will serve as the Assistant Director of the Five Points Center for Active Adults, with additional city-wide programming responsibilities for the Active Adults program.

  • Reviews current trends, surveys participants, and seeks community input to develop programs for aging populations.
  • Plans, organizes, directs, and supervises a variety of classes, and programs, that are social, artistic, educational, and therapeutic in nature for adult and senior populations. May include programs in Active Adults Centers, Community/Neighborhood Centers, Virtual (online) programs, and outdoor programming.
  • Works with outside agencies to promote and offer recreational opportunities for adults of all ages including, but not limited to, Resources for Seniors and Wake County Senior Games.
  • Assists with the operating budget related to senior/ older adult programs for the City of Raleigh.
  • Observes necessary precautions to ensure the safety of recreation participants and spectators; provides first aid in case of minor injury.
  • Assists in selecting, training, supervising, and coordinating the schedules of part-time staff, instructors, and volunteers.
  • Supervises the custodial care of facilities; reviews the maintenance of the equipment and buildings; refers problems to the appropriate personnel.
  • Prepares daily deposits, payroll, activity, attendance, revenue, expenditure, reports and ensures safety protocols are followed.
  • Assists users of facilities to provide information related to regulations and standards of conduct.
  • Helps conduct public relations for the Active Adults Centers and programs; advises patrons of programs and activities offered; develops marketing materials for the Active Adults Centers and programs, handles facility rentals.
  • Maintains and orders equipment, supplies, and materials.
  • Assists Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources Department with necessary duties related to inclement weather situations.
  • Directly supervise several part-time and seasonal employees in the Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources Department. 
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. 
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in Parks and Recreation or directly related field and up to one year of related experience may be preferred.
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.
Licensing/Certifications
  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License, or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire, and a satisfactory driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A relevant experience of 4 years.
  • 2 years of experience full or part-time programming for senior adults and 2 years of experience full-time managing a recreation facility.
  • Ability to attain a CDL within 6 months.
  • Certified Parks and Recreation Professional.
