City of Raleigh Municipal Government is Hiring a Part-time Permitting Advocate Near Raleigh, NC

Job DescriptionThe Permitting Advocate plays a critical role in the initial stages of the development process. This position is responsible for managing the intake of development service requests, ensuring accurate and efficient processing of technical documentation, and providing technical support and guidance to clients and internal teams. The ideal candidate will possess strong customer service skills, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. In addition, this position is devoted to providing review and permitting of land development and redevelopment projects through processes governed by the City of Raleigh’s Unified Development Ordinance. Work may include serving as initial point of contact for plan and project intake; processing permits; approving permits not requiring plans review; routing permits for review; researching property information; processing non- permit applications; explaining fees, policies and regulations; and performing quality control, as assigned.
Duties And Responsibilities
  • Customer service-oriented work environment with positive and friendly attitude even in challenging circumstances, identifies solutions, and implements appropriate actions to meet customer needs and expectations.
  • Provides information and assistance to applicants with understanding of permit requirements and ensuring compliance, with applications and issuance of permits for various construction projects, renovations, or other activities as it relates to Residential, Non-Residential and infrastructure projects.
  • Coordinate meetings amongst applicants, design teams and City of Raleigh personnel.
  • Effectively prioritizes and manages their workload, balancing multiple customer inquiries or tasks simultaneously while maintaining a high level of service quality and responsiveness.
  • Collaborates with other departments or agencies involved in the permitting process, such as planning departments, fire departments, and environmental agencies.
  • Works with developers, architects, engineers, property owners, governmental agencies, and contractors regarding technical aspects to validate information in support of clarifying codes and policies.
  • Advocates for and contributes to the fulfillment of the mission, objectives, and values of the Planning and Development Department for the City of Raleigh. Implements process improvement principles within designated areas of responsibility.
Typical QualificationsEducation and ExperienceHigh school Diploma (or GED), supplemented by college coursework in engineering, planning, architecture, construction management, or a related field. Four years of progressively responsible development services technician experience.
Preferred QualificationsExperience in a public agency.
