A professional position responsible for performing administrative, supervisory and technical work, planning, organizing and directing the activities of the Police Support Services divisions: Employee Development, Support Services, Communications, Community Relations, and Volunteers.

  • Plans, organizes and directs the activities of the divisions under the position’s span of control.
  • Assists in the development of staffing and program plans in response to crime reports, trends and community needs, coordinates implementation of same after approval.
  • Attends (conducts as necessary) staff meetings and facilitates the flow of communication throughout the divisions.
  • Assists the Chief of Police and serves as Acting Chief of Police in the Chief's absence.
  • Responds to serious situations that requires a command officer's presence and performs all duties of a sworn officer as necessary. 
  • Assists with the management, preparation, and oversight of the agency's budget.
  • Exercises oversight and implementation of important agency projects as directed by the Chief of Police.
  • Serves as an assessor in good standing for the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation, Inc.

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of local and State statutes, laws, ordinances, and the necessary procedures for their enforcement.
  • Knowledge of the use of emergency communication equipment, codes, and response protocols.
  • Knowledge of the use of technical equipment including but not limited to computers, cameras, and radar units.
  • Knowledge of the use of law enforcement equipment, including but not limited to personal safety devices, firearms, non-lethal weapons (TASER, baton, subject control spray), and suspect restraints.
  • Knowledge of defensive tactics techniques and techniques for restraining suspects.
  • Knowledge in operating a police vehicle, a including high-speed pursuit, proper placement during an incident and/or traffic stop, and proper general care and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of general principles of management and supervision.
  • Skills in the use of emergency communication equipment, codes, and response protocols.
  • Skills in the use of technical equipment including computers, cameras, and radar units.
  • Skills in the use of law enforcement equipment, including personal safety devices, firearms, non-lethal weapons (TASER, baton, subject control spray), and suspect restraints.
  • Skills in operating a police vehicle, including a high-speed pursuit, proper placement during an incident and/or traffic stop, and proper general care and maintenance.
  • Skills in exercising supervisory techniques.
  • Ability to identify and analyze problems, evaluate alternative solutions and make sound judgments.
  • Ability to move quickly and forcefully in response to unexpected situations.
  • Ability to maneuver and work in a variety of ground conditions.
  • Ability to operate patrol vehicles in emergency mode.
  • Ability to get in and out of a patrol car on a frequent basis.
  • Ability to successfully pass a physical skills and agility test.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
  • Associate's degree in Criminal Justice or related field.
  • Eight years of progressively responsible experience in law enforcement, with five years in a supervisory capacity.
  • Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license.
  • Must possess a current Florida Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) Certificate.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Exercises direct supervisory over all support services activities, including Employee Development, Support Services, Communications, Community Relations, and Volunteers.
  • May occasionally be required to act as Police Chief as circumstances require.
