THE CITY OF PORT HURON IS CURRENTLY ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR THE FOLLOWING FULL-TIME EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY:

PARKS / FORESTRY / CEMETERY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I
** DAILY REFUSE COLLECTION **

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: To be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of assigned trucks and other automotive and power-driven equipment; to perform manual labor, miscellaneous maintenance, repair and construction work; and to perform related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Work is performed under the supervision of a foreman or other designated official.

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK: An employee in this class may be called upon to do any or all of the following: (These examples do not include all of the tasks which the employee may be expected to perform.)

  • Maintain City owned parks, playgrounds, and other recreational areas prior to and throughout the season of use.
  • Inspect City owned parks and playgrounds for safety and liability issues. Immediately report issues to supervision.
  • Maintain City ball diamonds.
  • Maintain cemetery grounds as required.
  • Maintenance of both City owned beaches.
  • Assist with trash removal at both City owned beaches, including weekends and holidays.
  • Maintenance of downtown landscape and irrigation.
  • General maintenance of the irrigation systems for the City owned parks.
  • Operate a mini packer.
    • Adjustment to working hours during the summer months. Summer work schedule is Thursday – Monday, which includes working holidays that fall in this time period.
  • Operate a tractor/mower in cutting grass.
  • Operate a snow plow in snow removal operations.
  • Install, repair, and replace recreational facilities and equipment.
  • Check for minor maintenance work on truck, tractor and mower used in daily operations.
  • Make recommendations to supervisor for major repairs of grounds and buildings.
  • Maintain required inventory reports on supplies and equipment.
  • Perform related work as required.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT:

  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance requirements of various automotive and power-driven equipment.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and driving practices.
  • Knowledge of automotive and power-driven equipment lubrication and repair activities.
  • Ability to operate automotive equipment skillfully, safely and in accordance with rules and regulations.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to work effectively with other employees.

Certification(s):

  • Parks/Forestry Equipment Operator I – Certified Playground Safety Inspector
  • Parks/Forestry Equipment Operator I – Certified Pool Operator (backup)
  • Cemetery Equipment Operator I – Certified Pesticide Applicator

An employee in this class, upon appointment, shall have the equivalent of the following training and experience:

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or GED.
  • Some reasonable experience in the operation of automotive and power-driven equipment.
  • Must have a valid Michigan Driver License (Operator’s) and a valid Michigan Commercial Driver License (CDL), Group A/Air.

Working Hours:

  • Fall / Winter / Spring work schedule is Monday – Friday, 4:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
  • Summer work schedule is Thursday – Monday, 4:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., which includes working holidays that fall in this time period. Scheduled days off will be Tuesday and Wednesday.
  • Ability and willingness to work overtime and callouts, as required

Salary Range: $20.46 - $25.57 hourly

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in all types of weather conditions
  • Ability to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 80 pounds
  • Ability to operate various types of heavy equipment
  • Ability to push, pull, grasp, reach, stoop and crouch with ease, often in tight/small/hard to reach places
