THE CITY OF PORT HURON IS CURRENTLY ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR THE FOLLOWING FULL-TIME EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY:

APPRAISER II

This position requires an individual with an MCAO (Level II) certification from the Michigan State Assessors Board, and the willingness and ability to obtain an MAAO (Level III) certification, at the City’s expense.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: To assist the City Assessor in performing administrative responsibilities and field work of a technical nature. Duties involve maintenance of property records and maps; ability to appraise real (residential, commercial and industrial) and personal property according to the Michigan State Tax Commissions regulations and laws; BS&A, APEX and office computer applications; independent projects; contact with the public.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Work is performed under the direct supervision of the City Assessor.

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK: An employee in this class may be called upon to do any or all of the following: (These examples do not include all of the tasks which the employee may be expected to perform.)

  • Assist the City Assessor in the administrative responsibilities within the Assessing Department.
  • Assist in the preparation of the assessment roll and personal property statements.
  • Appraise real and personal property according to the Michigan State Tax Commission regulations and laws.
  • Inspect, measure, and calculate values of residential and commercial real properties according to the Michigan State Tax Commissions regulations and laws.
  • Interpret and draw legal descriptions.
  • Inspect and review building permits for valuation purposes.
  • Perform necessary field work and inspections as required.
  • Perform special independent and group projects.
  • Veterans Exemptions and audits as needed.
  • Assist in lot splits and combinations of property.
  • Work on a daily basis with the general public.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT:

  • Considerable knowledge of appraisal practices and methods.
  • Considerable knowledge of the Michigan State Tax Commissions rules, regulations, and laws governing the assessment of real and personal property.
  • Working computer knowledge of Word, Excel, BS&A and APEX programs.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate reports and records.
  • Excellent public relations skills.

An employee in this class, upon appointment, should have the equivalent of the following training and experience:

  • High school diploma with course work in Assessment Administration.
  • Associates degree to Bachelors degree preferred.
  • MCAO (Level II) certification from the Michigan State Assessors Board and the ability to obtain an MAAO (Level III) certification.
  • Must have a valid Michigan Driver License (Operator’s).

Working Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Salary Range: $55,000 - $60,000 annually
