Description

A Utilities Electrician Apprentice is an entry-level electrical trainee position assigned to a Utilities Electrician or a Water Treatment Plant Mechanic. The incumbent will learn the concepts and skills necessary to become a Utilities Electrician. Utilities Electrician Apprentices work under the observation of a journeyman-level Utilities Electricians and Treatment Plant Mechanics building basic skills and gaining additional tasks and responsibilities as they improve. Gains experience and understanding of lighting fixtures, power distribution equipment such as transformers and switchboards, outlets, load centers, panel boards, motor controls, pump controls, valves, variable frequency drives and programmable logic controllers as well as other equipment associated with the workings of a Water Treatment Facility. Work will also involve the mechanical and operational aspects of water/wastewater treatment equipment and its installation. Work will include the use of test equipment, multimeters, and various other instruments used in electrical repair and troubleshooting. Incumbent will be required to attend outside training classes, seminars and programs as required to prepare for and pass an Electrical Journeyman examination in the State of Florida. Work assignments are made either orally or through written orders such as Maximo work orders and may be accompanied by diagrams or blueprints. Work is reviewed through completion records, conferences and observation of results obtained. Good communication and a high level of documentation is an important function of this position. This position is classified as "Essential". Incumbent will be required to work overtime during and after hurricanes or other disasters and be available to respond to emergency calls days, nights, weekends and holidays in a timely manner. Performs other related work as required.
Typical Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent and be able to pass Basic Skills Test, Multi-Craft Aptitude Test, Color Identification Test and Drug Screening. Candidates must possess effective communication skills with the ability to speak, write and understand English. Must follow safety procedures and promote a safe work environment and comply with OSHA respiratory guidelines regarding facial hair. Applicant must be able to pass a pulmonary function medical test. Must obtain Six Sigma White Belt certification within two years of hire. A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications. Familiar with and able to understand, standard practices, tools, equipment, procedures, terminology and safety standards of the electrical trade. Familiar with elementary electrical theory. Understand the use of electrical tools and equipment. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Possession of a valid, appropriate driver's license and an acceptable driving record. Ability to perform moderate moving up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis and occasionally perform moving up to 75 lbs. Must have ability to detect differences between colors, including shades of color and brightness. Exposure to chemicals, machinery hazards and adverse outdoor weather conditions. Physical abilities include seeing, hearing, talking, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, kneeling, bending, reaching, and climbing.

Employees are paid biweekly. The pay range consists of a minimum and maximum salary. Initial appointment is usually made at the minimum salary of the pay range, but a higher salary may be considered for an especially well qualified candidate or to meet unusual needs. Annual merit increases of up to 3% up to the maximum of the pay range are based on fully effective job performance, or above, and are not automatic. Eligible Fire department combat employees receive annual merit increases of up to 4%.
Group health insurance is paid for by the City; 100% for full time employees and 50% for eligible dependents.
Paid leave includes: Vacation - accrue nine (9) days annually with additional days awarded for longevity; Sick Leave - accrue twelve (12) days annually; Holidays - thirteen (13) days off; Personal Days - two personal days after six months of service.
Pension plan: General Employees' Retirement System participation is required for all eligible employees. Each employee contributes a tax deferred deduction of 10% of their salary to the plan and the City contributes a like amount. The defined benefit pension plan is based on the average of the last three base salary years times 3% times years of service. If an employee leaves the employ of the City prior to seven (7) year vesting or retirement, their contribution, with interest, is refundable. Fire pension participants contribute 11.6% and are required to participate in the Pompano Beach Police & Firefighters' Retirement System.
Other benefits offered to City employees include: cost of living adjustments (when applicable), tuition reimbursement, tax deferred savings plan, credit union services, direct deposit, sick leave bank, sick leave to vacation conversion, employee assistance program, Deferred Retirement Option Plan (DROP), Voluntary Employee Beneficiary Account (VEBA), and a four day work week for certain positions.
Part time employees are not eligible for benefits and benefits may vary depending on bargaining units.
