Parks and Facilities Maintenance Worker I or II Department: Parks & Facilities FLSA Status: Non-exempt Pay Grade: 18 Supervisor: Parks & Facilities Supervisor Created/Updated: 2/20/2020 Summary of Responsibilities: Under the general supervision of the Parks and Facilities Supervisor, performs all maintenance duties and is charged with the general upkeep of the City parks and facilities with a specific emphasis on Park grounds, i.e. lawns, landscaping, playgrounds, ballfields etc. Example of duties:
Prepares parks and facilities daily for users (Clean restrooms, remove trash, etc)
Act as City Arborist, conducting tree inventories as well as planting, watering, pruning, and removals
Provide Landscape care including planting and maintaining shrubs, perennials, annual flower displays, mulching, weed control, and irrigation systems.
Responsible for the lawncare of City Parks, ballfields and facilities. Working to improve the health, quality and appearance of the lawns
Conduct Playground and park inspections and evaluations and conducts the necessary maintenance to ensure the safety of park and facility users
Relates parks and facilities issues to supervisor
Operates equipment safely and efficiently
Removes snow and ice from city facilities during winter months
Performs all other related duties as assigned
Desirable Minimum Qualifications:
An acceptable combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:
Must be able to obtain basic first aid/CPR certification within 180 days
Must be able to obtain a Chemical/Pesticide applicators license within 180 days
May be required to obtain a valid class B Commercial License
Skills in operating a variety of light duty maintenance equipment including tractors zero-turn mowers, chainsaws and weed-eaters
Ability to understand, analyze and implement ideas and concepts
Ability to establish good working relationships with the public, fellow employees, and supervisors.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Must be at least 18 years of age
High School diploma or equivalent
One year of experience in the field of parks and facilities or other related field required
Physical Demands and Working Environment
Environment: Work is performed primarily in a field setting:
The worker is subject to all environmental conditions including extreme heat and extreme cold. May be protected from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.
The worker is subject to noise. There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level.
The worker is subject to other hazards including a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working from high places, exposure to chemicals, etc.
Physical: The physical activity of this position include the following:
Lift from Floor to Waist - up to 25 lbs of force frequently
Lift from Floor to Shoulder - up to 50 lbs of force up to 45 in occasionally
Carry - up to 50 lbs of force a distance of 100 ft occasionally
Push/Pull Horizontal - up to 25 lbs of force frequently
Must be able to grip, climb, reach forward, reach overhead, bend, crouch, kneel
Vision adequate to visually determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned or make general observations of facilities or structures
The worker is required to have visual and physical capabilities to operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment
Starting wage of $17.30 - $21.00/hr is dependent on experience and skills. The City provides a generous benefit program including health, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability insurance, and paid vacation and sick leave. In addition to the competitive benefits package and salary, the City provides a LAGERS L-6 retirement plan with no employee contributions.
