Position Summary

This position is a member of the Maintenance and Facilities Department performing routine and general cleaning, landscape, custodial duties, and maintenance activities within assigned areas of responsibility including Downtown, Uptown, Parks and Facilities.

Examples of Essential and General Responsibilities

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Perform routine and general cleaning, janitorial cleaning, and landscape maintenance activities at City parks and facilities and on equipment.
  • Perform landscaping duties in parks and downtown grounds, including outdoor patios; mow, trim, prune, edge, rake, fertilize, water, seed, plant and cultivate landscaped areas as necessary.
  • Sweep, clear and clean gutters, curbs, culverts and catch basins; perform general grounds cleanup and outdoor cleaning; perform other minor maintenance and repair tasks as necessary.
  • Operate and maintain equipment used in the performance of assigned duties.
  • Perform maintenance and repair on a variety of equipment and systems, including sprinkler systems.
  • Clean, polish and sanitize building surfaces, including walls, stairs and floors; dust and polish furniture and fixtures; clean and sanitize trash cans and furniture.
  • Clean and maintain restrooms; clean mirrors, fixtures and floors; replace and maintain toiletry supplies.
  • Pick up trash at City facilities as assigned.
  • Paint furniture, equipment, and interior and exterior of buildings and structures; remove graffiti as needed.
  • Setup and maintain traffic control barriers as needed.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Minimum and Preferred Requirements

Minimum requirements must be clearly demonstrated on the application to be considered, however, meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee an invitation to compete further in the selection process. Experience requirements must be demonstrated in the "Work Experience" section of the application, other sections of the application will not be used to determine experience qualifications. (One year of work experience is the equivalent of 12 months of full-time work. "Full-time work" means at least 36 hours of work over a period of one week or 1,872 hours of work over a period of at least 12 months.) Qualifications noted as "desirable" or "preferred" are not included as part of the minimum requirements.
Experience:
  • No experience is required.
  • Recent, within the past 1-3 years, direct hands-on general cleaning, landscape, custodial duties, and building maintenance experience in a public sector or similar environment is preferred.
Training:
High School diploma or equivalent education is required.
License or Certificates:
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, and maintain a valid California driver license with a satisfactory driving record (a driving record may be deemed unsatisfactory for any of the following reasons: three or more moving violations or reportable accident within the last three years; conviction of driving under the influence within the last five years) is required.
Special Requirements:
  • Must be willing and able to work various hours including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Incumbent will be enrolled in the California Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) Pull Notice Program. The DMV Pull Notice Program provides information on the incumbents driving record and driving record status on a periodic basis to the City.
  • Incumbent must successfully complete a pre-employment background investigation, physical, and drug screen.

This position works a field environment, travel site to site, and shop environment or Aviation environment with exposure to noise, dust, grease, fumes, motorized equipment, inclement weather conditions, and potentially dangerous situations and may work on slippery or uneven surfaces; may be exposed to emergency situations. May require maintaining physical condition necessary for light to moderate lifting and carrying, walking or standing for prolonged periods; moderate pulling, pushing, kneeling, bending, climbing with both legs and arms; operating motorized equipment and vehicles; communicate in person; driving a vehicle for extended periods.
