City of Oxnard is Hiring a Refuse Driver Near Oxnard, CA

 The City of Oxnard’s Public Works Department is seeking a Solid Waste Equipment Operator (Refuse Driver) with strong technical, customer service, and safety skills to be part of the Environmental Resources team. This individual must be comfortable operating a variety of heavy equipment, such as front-end loaders, roll-off container trucks, side-loaders, lift-gate dump trucks and other vehicles. The ideal candidate will have operational and mechanical knowledge of different types of refuse/recycling vehicles and other standard equipment. This position will be responsible for providing collection, transport and disposal of residential, industrial and commercial waste and recycled materials.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:
  • Operate vehicle in accordance with Occupational and Safety Health Act (OSHA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements as well as all local, state and federal requirements and Company expectations for the Fleet; maintain a clean and safe vehicle.
  • Work closely with Route Checkers to improve route efficiencies and identify problem or unsafe accounts.
  • Perform pre- and post-trip inspections of assigned vehicles using standard Driver Vehicle Inspection Report; notes all issues on DVIR form for corrective review/repair.
  • Immediately report any unsafe situations or service calls to Route Checkers or Supervisor before attempting service.
  • Position containers on the customer’s property in a manner that ensures lids are properly replaced, containers are set in an upright position, and containers do not block driveway entrances or traffic.
  • Notify Route Checkers and or supervisor of any incidents, accidents, injuries, or property damage.
  • Follow route assignments throughout the day and completes all documentation when checking-in at the end of the route.
  • Completely dump all containers and leave the customer’s location clean and free of fallen debris. 
  • Communicate customer requests or issues to Supervisor or Route Checkers. .
  • Notify Supervisor or Route Checkers of issues on routes such as blocked containers, potential missed pick-ups or problems that arise on the route.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED/ SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Incumbents may serve as lead workers, assigning work and monitoring work completion. Receives general supervision on routine items which are performed according to established standards and procedures and receives specific work instruction regarding non-routine matters and deadlines.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This classification is distinguished from the Maintenance Technician in that it performs skilled maintenance and may serve in a lead capacity and/or provide training to others.
WORK SCHEDULE: Normal work days vary from Monday through Saturday with work hours from 5:00 am to 3:30 pm or 6:00 am to 4:30 pm, depending on shift assigned. Shifts are worked on a four day, ten hour schedule with two days off. In addition, this position may be required to be available to work additional hours in response to peaks in workloads and changes in department needs. Work hours and shifts are subject to change based on operational needs. May be required to work holidays This position is governed by the overtime provisions of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act and is eligible for overtime pay.

This class specification represents only the core areas of responsibilities; specific position assignments will vary depending on the needs of the Department.

  • Performs skilled general maintenance and operations activities in support of City departments or maintenance function; selects proper maintenance tools and equipment for assignment; performs work following established safety policies and procedures and applicable codes and regulations. May serve as lead worker by assigning work and monitoring work completion.
  • Maintains assigned equipment and tools; performs general inspections to ensure safe operating conditions; establishes priorities; performs repairs and/or maintenance work; cleans equipment, site area or grounds and performs preventative maintenance. 

  • Operates assigned equipment; plans routes, work activities and sets up work areas for safety and operational efficiency; may set up traffic control measures.

  • Responds to customer inquiries and concerns; maintains activity logs, records, work orders and related reports.

  • Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.

POSITION SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES MIGHT INCLUDE

Positions assigned to solid waste equipment operation may be responsible for:

  • Collecting and transporting residential, commercial and industrial waste and recycled material along assigned routes;

  • Unloading and disposing of material in appropriate landfill, disposal, transfer, mulching and/or recycling facility.

The following are minimum qualifications necessary for entry into the classification:

EDUCATION:

  • High School Diploma or GED

EXPERIENCE:

  • Three (3) years of technical maintenance experience related to solid waste or collections.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION:

  • Valid California Class B or Class A Commercial Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.

  • Must possess a valid medical card
  • Must possess an air brake endorsement with no restrictions.
  • Must have a safe and responsible professional driving history.
  • Additional certifications, licenses, endorsements and training may be required, depending on assignment. You may be required to submit documented proof of these requirements.

  • Must be able to effectively communicate in English, both orally and in writing

NOTE: For most positions, the City of Oxnard relies on office automation (Microsoft Office/Google) and web-based enabled tools, therefore candidates must be proficient and comfortable with computer use to perform functions associated with on-going work.

Regular and reliable attendance, effective communication skills, and development of effective working relationships are requirements of all positions.

Employees are required to participate in the City's direct deposit plan and are paid on a bi-weekly basis.

This position requires a 12 month probationary period.
