City of Orange City is Hiring a Fire inspector Near Orange, FL

JOB SUMMARY

  • The Fire Inspector conducts thorough life safety inspections to ensure compliance with applicable life safety and fire protection codes;
  • performs fire inspections of businesses, reviews site plans for new projects, inspects public buildings for safety, and conducts construction inspections;

coordinates and implements fire prevention programs and activities; and communicates findings, reports, and safety protocols with the public.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Inspections and Investigations (60%)
  • Conducts life safety inspections to ensure compliance with adopted life safety and fire protection codes and City Ordinances
  • Conducts State of Florida mandated inspections on schools, day-care facilities, and all other state-licensed care facilities
  • Assists with fire and arson investigations
  • Enforces compliance rules and laws by the Florida Fire Prevention code to business owners, property managers and business managers;

provides explanation of the steps needed to resolve deficiencies and problems

  • Assists the Fire Marshal with reviewing site, construction, architectural, engineering plans and shop drawings for compliance with all applicable fire codes and regulations with the Florida Fire Prevention Code along with municipal codes and ordinances
  • Assists the Fire Marshal with new construction inspections to ensure compliance
  • Reports and Records Management (30%)
  • Completes written inspection reports as required, noting any code violations and recommends corrective measures as necessary
  • Prepares cases for and provides testimony before the Code Enforcement Board
  • Responds to public complaints regarding potential code violations, answers questions and resolves complaints from the public, architects, contractors, developers, business owners, managers, and employees to provide guidance and information concerning code compliance procedures
  • Reviews mail and literature, prepares reports and correspondence, enters computer data, copies and files documents, answers the telephone, etc.
  • Public Education (10%)
  • Attends meetings, conferences and continues education classes as required
  • Introduces new technology, methods and regulations for fire prevention operations and provide information to supervisors
  • Coordinates, implements and participates in special events promoting fire prevention / Life Safety Education

OTHER DUTIES

  • May assume the duties of a Firefighter / EMT (or Paramedic) if certified
  • Represents the Department at meetings involving assigned activities
  • All employees will have a role in the City's disaster preparation and / or disaster recovery efforts, as may be designated in the City Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalency
  • A minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of experience and training in fire inspection and prevention, plan review and code enforcement
  • A comparable amount of training, education or experience can be substituted for the minimum qualifications

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Associate's Degree in Fire Science, Business, Public Administration or another related field
  • Four (4) years of preferred experience as a firefighter

ADDITONAL ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid Florida Driver's License
  • Florida State Minimum Standards Certification as a Firefighter as authorized by F.S.S. 633, or ability to obtain in a short period of time
  • Fire Safety Inspector Certification
  • Florida Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic Certification
  • State of Florida Fire Investigator Certification

COMPETENCIES

  • General knowledge of street locations, geography, and potential hazards within Orange City and Debary
  • Working knowledge of electrical, mechanical and building construction knowledge
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management personnel, co-workers, outside agencies and the general public
  • Ability to make decisions that impact the division
  • Ability to recognize safety hazards and to take precautionary measures to protect self and others
  • Ability to calculate fire flow calculations, determine ratios in mixing foam to extinguish fires and calculate estimate area of buildings to determine crowd management and other factors regarding fire investigations
  • Ability to inform the public or co-workers on fire prevention and management
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management personnel, co-workers, outside agencies and the general public
  • Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally, and in writing
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to meet job demands under emergency and / or strenuous and prolonged situations

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Primarily, works indoors in an office environment or non-emergency situations
  • Occasional outside work in emergency situations
  • Moderate noise level in the work environment
  • Exposure to hazardous conditions : flames, fire, explosives, chemicals, smoke, extreme cold / heat, fumes / gases, moving vehicles, falling structures and debris, heights, power lines, electricity, poor ventilation, poor lighting, and related hazards
  • May assume risks as described in the Fire-fighter / EMT description

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Must meet physical requirements as indicated for Florida Firefighter Certification (if State Certified Firefighter I & II)
  • Must be able to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and / or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects
  • Must be able to lift, position, pull, drag, carry, or manipulate weights up to 100 pounds or more with proper mechanics, equipment, or assistance when on a fire or medical scene
  • Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work; must be able to remain on feet for periods of time, withstand uncomfortable and / or dangerous physical conditions at fire scenes, and perform manual tasks
  • Sufficient manual dexterity to allow the use of a keyboard and writing
  • Acceptable hearing (with or without hearing aid)
  • Ability to meet job demands under emergency and / or strenuous and prolonged situations
  • Tasks involve handling machinery; extrication equipment and other tools or machinery
