Veterans Resource Center Volunteer - Ontario City Library

Would you like to positively impact our community andhelp those who served and protected our countryJoin the Ontario City Library’s Veterans Resource Center teamThe Library’s Veteran Resource Center is seeking volunteers to assist veterans and theirfamiliesconnect to information aboutvarious benefits, services, and available resources.

Volunteers will commit to at least on3-hourshiftper week for at least 6 months and provide information and referral assistance to veterans and their family membersVolunteers will be trained to greet and conduct walk-in and scheduled appointments with veterans and their family members, referring them to information regardinghealthcare, housing, employment, education, Veterans Affairs claims and benefits and other resources. The ideal volunteer must be patient and empathetic, have good listening skills, and be able to maintain confidentiality and respect personal boundaries.

The Ovitt Family Community Library is located at 215 East C Street and operates Monday through Thursday, 10AM – 9PM, Friday through Saturday 10AM – 6PM, and Sunday 1PM – 4PM. For additional information regarding the Library or the Veterans Resource Center please refer to the City’swebsite.

This is a volunteer position with the City of Ontario. The City provides no compensation for the services performed by volunteers. Volunteers are not entitled to any benefits from the City, including but not limited to Workers' Compensation benefits. The City of Ontario Library is unable to assist individuals seeking placement for mandatory community service.

Volunteers are an invaluable community resource that provide a broad source on expertise, talent and manpower for City programs and other services. Every minute volunteered allows the City to better serve our residents. We could not do what we do without the hundreds of dedicated volunteers already serving the City of Ontario. Each year we recognize one outstanding volunteer on our Volunteer Walk of Fame next to City Hall. 
The essential functions typically performed by the Veterans Resource Center Volunteer include the following: 
  • Provide information and resources to visitors, including contact information to veterans’ organizations.

  • Staff the Veterans Resource Center desk to receive walk-in appointments.

  • Receive and return phone calls to the Veterans Resource Center.

  • Assist in preparing displays and restocking informational resources in the Veterans Resource Center.

  • Assist in library programs or special events.

  • Maintain the confidentiality of patron’s personal information.

Must be 18 years of age or older. Must be willing to volunteer a minimum of one 3-hour shift per week; minimum six month commitment is requested. Basic computer and Internet skills required; smart phone experience is desirable. Veterans preferred. Training will be provided.
 
This is a volunteer (unpaid) position with the City of Ontario. As such, the City of Ontario's General Process for employment does not apply to this position. All volunteers are required to pass a criminal background check. Criminal arrest and/or conviction information as well as subsequent arrest notifications will be obtained from the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and/or Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
