City of Ontario is Hiring a Senior Electrician Near Ontario, CA

Senior Electrician
A 9.5% general salary increase will be applied effective July 2024.
An additional 8% general salary increase will be applied effective July 2025. 
The City of Ontario Public Works Agency is seeking an experienced, progressive, and service oriented person for the position of a Senior Electrician. The Senior Electrician, under general supervision, participates in and leads a crew in the maintenance and repair of City streetlights, park and athletic field lighting, and building electrical systems. This role follows all electrical codes and guidelines as set forth in the current National Electrical Code (NEC). The Senior Electrician also oversees emergency generation equipment during off hours.
 
The Ideal candidate will have the ability to assist in trouble shooting the operability of an Uninterrupted Power Source (UPS) system. The ideal candidate will also have the ability to Interface with governing regulators to ensure all local, state and federal requirements are met when performing work on site or performing survey/audits. Position will require accessing various heights, operation of a bucket truck and knowledge and certification of an 18-ton crane truck, as well as crane certification. The Senior Electrician performs preventative, corrective maintenance, and new installations of all electrical systems. This role is also responsible for reviewing construction and small projects documents to ensure proper interface with existing systems.
 
In addition, the successful candidate will be a highly organized, motivated team player, who will embody the traits of a Five Tool Player - Leader, Thinker, Operator, Communicator and Public Servant and demonstrate the values of the City's Approach to Public Service - Commitment to the Community, Excellence through Teamwork, and Doing the Right Thing the Right Way.

  • The hiring department will consider the Promotional Eligibility List prior to considering candidates on the Open Eligibility List.

Background Check RequirementAs part of their duties, the Senior Electrician may be assigned to work in the Ontario Police Department facilities. As a result, employment in this position is subject to the satisfactory completion of a background investigation conducted by the Ontario Police Department. The background investigation is a rigorous process which often takes several months to complete. This background investigation will include the passing of a polygraph test. Candidates may be disqualified from further consideration during the background investigation for a variety of reasons including but not limited to: an excessive number of traffic citations and/or collisions; arrests and/or convictions; a history of illegal substance abuse; poor credit history (factors include bankruptcy, foreclosures, liens, repossessions, and recency); or thefts from a previous employer. The functions typically performed by the Senior Electrician include the following: 
  • Maintains City Street lighting automated control systems, park and athletic field lights, building security lighting, commercial electrical systems, and commercial building lighting control systems.
  • Handles customer inquiries. Meets with contractors and utility company to discuss electrical work in progress; monitors and/or check on vendor/contractor activities while performing work in the City.
  • Completes requisitions and orders electrical equipment.
  • Contacts vendors and distributors to determine price and availability of needed equipment and materials.
  • Marks underground electrical lines for contractors digging nearby; repairs lines if damaged.
  • Schedules and assigns work crew in building electrical work.
  • Provides assistance to work crew when needed.
  • Removes and replaces damaged or downed street light poles; removes and replaces damaged street light control at job site.
  • Instruct, guide and oversee crew to ensure proper techniques and safety rules are followed to complete all work orders, working and troubleshooting high and low voltage equipment.
  • Reviews daily time sheets and prepares reports.
  • Works on special projects as assigned.
Education
High School diploma or recognized equivalent. Experience
Five years of commercial electrical work, including lead work.Special Requirements
 Ability to Operate aerial equipment, use electrical test equipment, plan and layout electrical work, follow proper codes and procedures. Work extended hours and be on-call for emergencies.Licenses
Valid California Class C driver's license and an acceptable driving record at the time of appointment.Valid Class B driver's license within 6 months of appointment.CertificationsJourneyman Electrician or equivalent certification.
