The Position

The Ontario Fire Department
TheOntario Fire Department is a team committed to professional and compassionate public service. The Department responds to more than 23,000 calls per year serving and protecting a population well over 185,000 people, covering nearly 50 square miles. There are 11 fire stations, including the Ontario International Airport fire station, with a daily staffing level of 74 sworn firefighters. These fire stations house ten 4-person paramedic engine companies, four 4-person truck companies, a 8-person ARFF station, a 2-person alternate transport vehicle, 2 fire investigators, and 2 battalion chiefs.
Ontario Fire Department has 265 personnel comprised of 213 sworn firefighters and 52 professional staff members serving our community across seven bureaus – Administrative Services, EMS, Fire Prevention, Operations, Personnel & Professional Standards, Support Services, and Training & Professional Development.

Periodic inspections are then conducted to ensure code compliance. The Bureau of Fire Prevention is responsible for developing and implementing programs and policies that prevent or reduce the magnitude of emergency occurrences, such as loss of life and property, or environmental damage.

Examples of Essential Functions
The essential functions typically performed by the Fire Safety Technician include the following:
- Performs inspection and compliance work on residential unit apartment complexes.
- Prepares and maintains records and reports regarding fire prevention activities.
- Issues notices of violations to property owners; under supervision, issues citations and assists in the legal process to bring properties up to code compliance.
- Assists property owners with rapid access system requests and concerns.
- Assists on various inspections of buildings of various occupancies including conducting permit inspections for special events.
- Provides information to the public concerning fire prevention practices and procedures.
- Assists in presenting public education on fire and life safety to schools, businesses and at special events.
- Assists with creating and maintaining public educational information materials.
- Provides technical and administrative support.
- Performs other duties as required.
Qualification Guidelines
Education
High School diploma or a recognized equivalent.
Experience
One year experience performing public contact work in a compliance, inspection, or in a customer service capacity.
Certification
Obtain a PC 832 certificate issued by the California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) prior to the end of the probationary period.
Special Requirements:
Successful completion of the following California State Fire Marshal (CSFM) approved courses prior to the end of the probationary period: Fire Inspector 1A, 1B, and 1C.
(If Fire Prevention 1A, 1B and 1C has already been obtained, this requirement may be waived.)
License
Valid California Class C driver's license and acceptable driving record at time of appointment and throughout employment.
Desirable
Familiarity with regulations and standards specified in the California Fire and Building Codes. Previous course work in the field of study related to Fire Safety or Fire Prevention. Completion of Fire Prevention Officer coursework (1A, 1B, 1C) or Fire Inspector I coursework (1A, 1B, 1C, and 1D) through the Office of the California State Fire Marshal (CSFM). Possession of the PC832 certification. Highly desirable candidates will have previous experience working for a local government agency.
