Job Description

Position is responsible for supervising and working with a work crew or work groups involved in a variety of work projects including but not limited to: construction, repair, and/or maintenance projects. Work includes directing and assisting work crews, ensuring for the quality and completeness of work performed, and assisting in the overall efficiency of project operations.

Responsibilities:

• Supervises and works with work crews of skilled and semi-skilled laborers, equipment operators, and/or laborers in the performance of work duties including snow plowing, sanding, road and sidewalk construction, asphalting and curb setting, street sweeping, grounds maintenance. May assist in utilities and traffic maintenance functions.
• Ensures the most efficient use of manpower and machinery for each project.
• Assigns work to employees, enforces safety regulations, and maintains discipline.
• Conducts employee meetings to respond to inquiries and provide information and explanation to employees regarding work assignments.
• Lays out work to be performed, takes measurements, calculates quantities of materials needed, and assists in ordering supplies and equipment for projects; corresponds with vendors as needed.
• Reviews work of the crew assigned during progress and upon completion for compliance with instructions and conformance with accepted trade practices.
• Maintains records and prepares reports as required, including project status reports, accident reports, and vehicle reports.
• Meets with supervisor to discuss work schedule and review work performed by crews and individual crew members.
• Operates and maintains vehicles, tools, and equipment used by the department, assists in making minor repairs to non-mechanical equipment and tools.
• Provides support and assistance, as needed, in snow removal and ice removal operations and other emergencies as declared by the City.
• Performs similar or related duties as required by the supervisor.

Qualifications:

• A candidate for this position should have a High School Diploma or equivalent, and five to seven (5-7) years of prior experience in construction and/or maintenance; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• A candidate for this position should have a valid Class B Massachusetts Commercial Drivers License; Class A preferred.
• A candidate for this position should have a valid Massachusetts Driver’s License.
• Supervisory experience preferred.
