City of Newton is Hiring a Fire Inspector (PT) Near Newton, NC

An employee in this class performs inspections of code compliance. Presents fire prevention programs. Works to collaborate with other City departments, the general public, local businesses, and other agencies. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Fire Marshal. Other related work as required. 

Must be able to physically perform the basic life operation support functions of walking, talking, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, hearing, and repetitive motions. Employee must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects and possess the visual acuity of prepare and analyze data; operate a computer terminal; perform extensive reading; inspect small defects or parts; operate machines; and use measurement devices.
 
The employee in this position must be able to work in both inside and outside environmental conditions, is subjected to noise and other workplace hazards including a variety of physical conditions such as proximity to moving mechanical parts or electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or chemicals, contact with potentially infectious bodily fluids, and performing job duties in narrow aisles or passage ways. The employee will also be subjected to the potential for varied atmospheric conditions that affect the respiratory system of the skin such as fumes, odors, mists, gases, or poor ventilation, and the employee may be require to wear a respirator.
  • Conducts fire inspections and re-inspections of commercial and industrial buildings, schools, day care centers, nursing homes, and places of public assembly;
  • Ensures that deficiencies are corrected; levies fines for noncompliance;
  • Designs, schedules, and presents fire prevention programs;
  • Instructs and provides technical assistance to city departments regarding OSHA regulations;
  • Reviews and interprets codes and policies pertaining to fire inspection, suppression, and prevention;
  • Provides city employees with safety training such as SDS, hazard communications, confined space, fire extinguishing, etc.;
  • Responds to fire calls; operates fire apparatus and related equipment;
  • Reviews construction plans for compliance with fire code;
  • Maintains reasonable and predictable attendance;
  • Performs related tasks as required.
  • Thorough knowledge of the modern principles and techniques of fire prevention including inspection, hazards, and elimination of dangerous conditions; 
  • Thorough knowledge of the geography of the city; 
  • Thorough knowledge of the laws and ordinances of the state and city regarding fire prevention; 
  • General knowledge of the principle practices of building construction and electrical and mechanical systems; 
  • Ability to recognize existing and potential fire hazards in a wide variety of structures and installations; 
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions; 
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise written reports; 
  • Ability to interpret and enforce rules and regulations firmly, tactfully, and impartially;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

Education and Experience 

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited community college with major course work in fire science and extensive experience in fire suppression and prevention. 

Special Requirements:

Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license (may require a non-commercial driver’s license, Class B).
NC Firefighter certification, Fire Inspector I.
Certification in NIMS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700 & 800.
