Salary Range : $68,492 – $76,825

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Directs and supervises the construction, maintenance and repair of water distribution systems, fixtures and equipment; does related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

This position involves responsibility for planning, supervising and participating in the installation, repair and replacement of water mains, valves, hydrants and meters. Works basically independently under the general direction of the Superintendent of the Water Department and in accordance with established policies and standardized procedures of the trade. Supervision is exercised over motor equipment operators, maintenance men and maintenance laborers. Employees in this class must be available for emergency repairs at all times to the water distribution system.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative only)

Assigns, supervises and inspects the work of employees engaged in the repair, maintenance, installation and replacement of water system equipment; Directs the caulking, repair and replacement of pipes and mains; Directs the replacement of bituminous material and concrete for street openings; Directs the tapping of mains for extension of consumer water services; Directs cleaning of mains, valves, hydrants and other fixtures; Requisitions tools and equipment; Directs the investigation of' complaints of water stoppages or breaks in mains; Responds to emergency repair calls.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge of tools, materials, equipment and terminology used in water distribution systems; good knowledge of hydraulics as related to water distribution; good knowledge of installation, repair and maintenance of water distribution fixtures; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; ability to make routine laboratory and field tests far control of plant operation; ability to understand and follow complex oral and written directions; ability to work from plans and blueprints; reliability; mental alertness; god physical condition.

ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Four years of responsible experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of a water distribution system and graduation from a standard high school, or equivalent diploma; or any equivalent combination of training and experience as described above.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR ACCEPANCE OF APPLICATION:

Eligibility for a New York State operator's license. Possession of the license is required for appointment and throughout the employment of the incumbent.
