City of Mt. Juliet is Hiring a Fire Lieutenant Near Mount Juliet, TN

GENERAL SUMMARY

Manage and coordinate activities of multiple companies and services within the Fire Department; assist in the overall management and supervision of a Fire Company; and provide highly responsible and complex operational support to the Command Staff. Supervise firefighters who control and extinguish Municipals fires, protect life and property and conduct rescue efforts.

SUPERVISION

Regular supervision of the paid Lieutenant will be provided by a Battalion Chief. Battalion Chiefs work under the overall direction of the Deputy Fire Chief.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervises employees, including organizing, planning and directing the work of assigned employees and participating in the coaching and development process.
  • Lead by example by adhering to, complying with and supporting the City of Mt. Juliet Personnel Manual, and Standard Operating Guidelines (SOGs)
  • Assume supervisory responsibility for all activities and operations associated with assigned duties and services within the Fire Department.
  • Provide timely, accurate and thorough Performance Reviews for supervised employees; develop employees through coaching, feedback and training; draft and assign annual work objectives for assigned employees.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies and priorities for assigned department services; recommend, within departmental policy, appropriate service and staffing levels; recommend and enforce standard operating policies and procedures.
  • Select, train, motivate and evaluate Fire Department personnel; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies or develop improvement plans; prepare performance reviews of assigned staff.
  • Plan, direct, coordinate and review the work plan for assigned services within the Fire Department; meet with staff to identify and resolve problems; assign work activities, projects and programs; monitor workflow; review and evaluate work products, methods and procedures.
  • Provide responsible staff assistance to the Command Staff; prepare and present staff reports and other necessary correspondence as needed.
  • Conduct a variety of organizational studies, investigations and operational studies; recommend modifications to assigned programs, policies and procedures as appropriate.
  • Provide staff support to the operations division; attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of fire prevention and operations.
  • Respond to multiple fire alarms; direct fire suppression operations as appropriate; serve as company officer for assigned apparatus/company.
  • Respond to and resolve difficult and sensitive citizen inquiries and complaints.
  • Use departmental computer equipment to review records, obtain data on activities and programs and input various data.
  • Participate in a variety of fire prevention and operations activities and programs including training, fire investigations, Code enforcement, oversight of the fire scene and equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

The Lieutenant is expected to lead by example, adhering to, complying with and supporting the City of Mt. Juliet Personnel Manual, City of Mt. Juliet Code of Conduct, Fire Department of Mt. Juliet Chief’s Memos, and Standard Operating Guidelines (SOGs)

REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of three years of experience as a Firefighter.
  • Minimum of one year of experience supervising fire personnel.

MINIMUM REQUIRED LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

  • Must be able to obtain TN driver's license
  • Firefighter II certification (IFSAC / Pro Board)
  • Fire Instructor I Certification (IFSAC / Pro Board)
  • Fire Officer I Certification (IFSAC / Pro Board)
  • State of Tennessee Emergency Medical Technician License or higher. (Must be maintained as a condition of continued employment.
  • Valid HEALTHCARE PROVIDER (Basic life support, CPR, AED) Certification (Must be maintained as a condition of continued employment).
  • FEMA ICS 100, 200, 700 and 800.

PREFERRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

  • Completion of an Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university, with an emphasis on fire science, leadership, management, communication, education, or related field.
  • Incident Safety Officer certification (IFSAC or ProBoard)
  • Fire Officer II certification (IFSAC or ProBoard)
  • State of Tennessee Advanced Emergency Medical Technician License or higher. (Must be maintained as a condition of continued employment.)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Policies and procedures of the City of Mt. Juliet and the Fire Department.
  • Principles of employee coaching, supervising and training.
  • Operations, maintenance and uses of modern firefighting apparatus and equipment.
  • The National Incident Management System (NIMS).
  • Operational characteristics, services and activities of comprehensive fire suppression and prevention programs and emergency medical services.
  • The geography of the City and surrounding area.
  • Specialized communications equipment.
  • Organization and management practices as applied to the analysis and evaluation of programs.
  • Advanced principles and practices of budget preparation and administration.
  • Principles of supervision, training and performance review.
  • Prepare clear and concise work reports.
  • Plan, organize, direct and coordinate the work of operational personnel; delegate authority and responsibility.
  • Pass a medical/physical and all other examinations and tests required as required

PHYSICAL DEMANDS ANALYSIS – ADA COMPLIANCE

  • Sensory Requirements: Most all tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, visual cues or signals and ability to communicate orally and in writing.
  • Environmental Factors: Work is performed in various indoor and outdoor settings including living quarters and office areas. Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions. This may include smoke and fumes, hazardous chemicals and materials; intense heat; electrical hazards; confined spaces or high work places; extremely loud noises; and hazards of natural or man-made disasters. May work among people with emotional stress disorders, trauma, or contagious diseases.
  • Physical Ability: Ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of frequent lifting, standing, walking both normal and uneven sometimes slippery surfaces, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pulling, and carrying, pushing, and or pulling of moderately to extremely heavy objects and materials (20-125 pounds); may occasionally involve even heavier objects and materials up to 200 pounds. Requires the ability to constantly be in a position to drive a specialized vehicle, use of fingers, ability to grasp, and flexible wrist motions. Other conditions include walking, standing, stooping, and sitting at a desk. Must be able to wear assigned protective clothing and equipment.
