City of Moses Lake is Hiring a Recreation Instructor (Temporary, Part-Time) Near Moses Lake, WA

Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for coordination of assigned recreation programs and/or functions. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Writes class descriptions.
  • Prepares/sets up for classes. 
  • Teaches recreation programs and classes. 
  • Cleans area after programs and classes; maintains a clean and orderly supply area.
  • Participates in outreach events to promote classes and recreation programs. 
  • Collaborates with other recreation staffers to support other staff-led classes.
  • Creates equipment lists for classes; ensures that materials on hand are sufficient for classes. 
  • Oversees rosters and class participation to ensure all participants are registered.
  • Promotes programs and classes to public in a positive manner.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
  • Skill in identifying and resolving problems.
  • Skill in communicating with the public.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Recreation Superintendent or Recreation Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include City and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application. 

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of related classroom instruction duties. The need to coordinate with a variety of stakeholders contributes to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to provide instruction for children and/or adults in a recreation setting. Successful performance contributes to the provision of recreation services to the public.

CONTACTS

  • Contacts are typically with the youth, other City employees, and members of the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and motivate persons.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while standing or while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light objects.
  • The work is typically performed in a classroom, office, museum, or stockroom.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in leisure studies, recreation, or other relevant discipline preferred. 
  • Ability to read, write, and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for three (3) or more years.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.
  • All applicants must be able to successfully pass a background check process which includes reference checks and criminal history checks, or other.
