City of Modesto is Hiring a Police Reserve Officer (Hourly) Near Modesto, CA

This is an hourly position, limited to working approximately 19 hours per week or 1000 hours annually, whichever comes first. This position is non-benefited and is designated as a non-classified, at-will position.
The Police Reserve Officer is responsible to perform general law enforcement duties, which include street patrol, conducting preliminary police investigations, report writing, collision investigations, traffic control, issuance of citations, and other basic law enforcement functions.
The Modesto Police Department's Reserve Officer Unit is comprised of highly motivated and skilled professionals dedicated to serving the citizens of Modesto. Although our reserve officers are highly skilled and hourly city employees, they are not required to work a set schedule. Reserve Officers generate their own work schedules providing police services for our city, working thousands of hours each year. The City of Modesto also saves thousands of dollars in public emergency services funds each year from the contributions of time, dedication, and talent of our Reserve Officers.
The citizens and businesses in Modesto can be assured there will be no difference in the professional level of police service they receive from any Modesto Police Officer whether regular or reserve.
All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications of the position will be placed on an eligible list and invited to a selection interview with the Modesto Police Department.

Essential Functions:
Perform general law enforcement, which includes street patrol, conducting preliminary police investigations, report writing, collision investigations, traffic control, issuance of citations, and other basic law enforcement functions.
Reserve Officers are also utilized at special events such as parades, street fairs, or security for major community events.
Provide support services to other units within the department. Reserve Officers perform most the same duties as a full-time officer.
 
Required to work during maximum deployment assignments such as, New Year’s Eve, Halloween, major disasters, or major events.
 
Perform at least twenty hours of service each month. Reserve Officers will receive an additional four hours per month of training.
Gather information from individuals or reference sources to complete and process various routine forms, records, and applications; and contact individuals to obtain additional information.
Establish and maintain office files and research and compile inform­ation from files.

Provide factual information regarding City or unit activities and func­tions.
Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.
Observe and maintain a safe working environment in compliance with established safety programs and procedures.
Marginal Functions:
Perform related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
Principles and practices of law enforcement and community regulations.
Criminal law with particular reference to apprehension, arrest, search and seizures.
Rules and regulations of the Modesto Police Department.
Topography and geography of Modesto City Limits including locations and functions of social service agencies.
Civil law, codes and ordinances, with particular reference to the administrative functions of the Modesto Police Department.
Purpose and objectives of modern detention facility techniques.
Principles and techniques of supervising group activities in detention, secured setting facility.
Laws, statues, court proceedings, and regulations governing both sentenced and unsentenced inmates.
Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications.
Ability to:
Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Develop favorable public relations and maintain an appearance that projects a positive image.
Think clearly, quickly and accurately in emergency situations.
Work irregular hours, as required.
Learn procedures, processes and forms related to assigned area.
Under direction, learn pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, rules, and regulations.
Maintain accurate records and files.
Read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
 
Follow and interpret written instructions.
Accurately complete reports and citations.
Perform procedures in an organized and accurate manner.
Maintain attention to detail despite interruptions.
Communicate tactfully and effectively with the public and remaining calm and following designated protocols in stressful and/or emergency situations.
Communicate clearly and concise manner, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Operate office equipment including computers and supporting software applications.
Experience and Training Guidelines:
Any combination of education and experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:

Training:
High School diploma or GED equivalency.

Licenses/Certificates:
Possession of a P.O.S.T. training certificate (either Basic Police Academy, Reserve Officer Level I or Level II).

Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid California driver's license.
Additional Requirements:
Must be a minimum 21 years of age at time of appointment.
Must not have any felony convictions or serious misdemeanor convictions that would prohibit your from possessing a firearm.
Be a United States citizen or have applied for U. S. Citizenship.
Candidates are subject to an extensive background investigation including fingerprinting. 
Successfully pass a polygraph exam, psychological screening, & medical examination.
Individuals hired will be required to wear a uniform which is provided by the Police Department.

Mobility: frequent use of keyboard; frequent sitting for long periods of time; occasional bending or squatting. Lifting: frequently up to 10 pounds; occasionally up to 25 pounds. Vision: constant use of overall vision; frequent reading and close-up work; occasional color and depth vision. Dexterity: frequent repetitive motion; frequent writing; frequent grasping, holding, and reaching. Hearing/Talking: frequent hearing and talking, in person and on the phone. Emotional/Psychological: frequent decision-making and concentration; frequent public and/or coworker contact; occasional working alone. Environmental: frequent exposure to noise.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Conditions will vary depending on assignment. Work may be performed in a typical temperature-controlled office environment subject to typical office noise and environment. Work may also be performed in a typical outdoor environment on a year-round basis subject to street or field noise and year round weather conditions. Some positions may be assigned to remote locations. Position may require occasional overtime or weekend work and travel is rare.
