Job Description

As a swim programmer, this leader will enhance the swim lesson experience and oversee the program's quality for participants and employees. Programmers will assist in managing the daily operations of swim programming and other aquatic-related programs. Under the direction of the City of Minnetonka Aquatics Manager, this position is required to work mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends. This position requires managing multiple activities, including operating and administrative duties, simultaneously and in a capacity that requires independent judgment.
Programmers must be effective at handling problems in the workplace, including anticipating, preventing, identifying, and solving problems as necessary. The ideal Swim Programmer should possess strong leadership qualities with supervision and mentoring staff.
Hours Schedule:
Staff will not be able to exceed an average of 30 hours/week annually. During the late spring and summer months, programs may work up to 40 hours/week with approval from the Aquatics Manager. On a seasonal basis, the employee and AQM will meet to determine a season schedule.
Schedule expectations:

  • A minimum of 15 hours/week for administrative or office tasks.
  • A minimum of 1 coordinator shift per week during the swim sessions.
  • A minimum of 7 hours/week spent in the pool, whether subbing or teaching assigned group or private lessons.
Programmers are expected to work as a swim instructor or swim coordinator as needed.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Assists in the training, supervision, and coordination of staff.
  • Knows, understands, and consistently applies and enforces safety and pool rules, policies and guidelines.
  • Interacts and supports other aquatics leadership staff during programming hours on topics related to swimmer progressions, employee evaluation/training, scheduling, and customer service.
  • Communicates with and maintains effective relationships with the members, participants, and other staff.
  • Communicates effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Provides excellent customer service and maintains a positive public image by immediately addressing questions and concerns from staff, patrons, participants, and parents.
  • Provide staff guidance, constructive feedback, and support as needed for all participants and staff to create an inclusive environment.
  • Other duties assigned by the Aquatics Manager.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School Diploma
  • At least 18 years of age
  • At least two years of swim lesson instruction, coaching, or program management experience.
  • A minimum of 20 hours of weekly availability.
    • Must be available to work mornings, evenings, and weekends.
  • Attend required staff meetings and training
  • Ability to swim and knows all four competitive swim strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly).
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal skills, communication, management, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to be held accountable, following through on commitments, producing timely work to required standards, and pitching in to complete tasks.
Desired Qualifications
  • College degree preferred or in process.
