City of Midland is Hiring a Welder Near Midland, TX

Under the supervision of the Fleet Service Manager of the City of Midland Fleet Services division, perform specialized duties involving welding and metal fabrication.
  • Perform inspections and preventative maintenance regarding weld integrity on a variety of City equipment assigned to various department.
  • Proficient In multiple welding processes: arc (SMAW), metal inert glass (MIG), tungsten inert glass (TIG), flux-core (FCAW), plastic, hard facing, oxygen/acetylene cutting, tempering, flame straightening air carbon-arc cutting, sheet metal cutting/bending, iron worker use and pipe bending.
  • Types of metals used in the welding process vary due o application and may consist of the following: mild steel, pipe (specialty and galvanized), high carbon steel (AR-400-, ARSOO and T-1), aluminum, stainless steel, brass, and plastic.
  • Designs and fabricates specialty items as required from descriptions supplied by end user
  • Welds on trucks, tanks, truck bodies, or other equipment as necessary.
  • Required to develop time and material estimates for custom fabrication, new vehicle up­ fitting and modifications to City equipment is required.
  • The equipment being fabricated or repaired shall be completed in accordance to the best known current manufacturing practices relative to design, materials, strength, quality, durability, safety, and workmanship and the latest codes, standards, and practices of the industry.
  • General mechanical knowledge to help repair vehicles as required, or
  • Operate forklifts, hoists, slings, grinders, cutting torch, plasma cutter, oxygen/acetylene torches, air carbon-arc cutting equipment, sheet metal cutting/bending equipment, iron worker, pipe bender, 20-ton press, or fabrication.
  • Inventories supplies and materials and replaces or orders when necessary.
  • Performs journey-level math skills and the use of measuring devices such as depth gauge, calipers, micrometer, dial-indictors, etc.
  • Clean and maintain shop facilities, equipment, tools and grounds.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to read and comprehend technical blueprints, schematics, and rough sketches and understand and follow work-related instructions and directions.
  • Ability to follow safety practices and procedures needed to operate equipment safely.
  • Perform other related duties required.
Ability to sit, stand and transport self from building to building. Ability to drive vehicles and equipment to and from work sites. Will work in extreme temperatures bending, kneeling, twisting and climbing in order to make repairs on vehicles and equipment. Ability to work with mechanical, biological, chemical and electrical hazards and be exposed to loud noise. Must wear specialized safety equipment such as respirators and protective clothing in performing duties. Required to perform heavy lifting frequently. Safety glasses, hearing protection and gloves are provided. Steel toed shoes are required. Uniforms and steel toed shoes will be provided after six (6) full months of employment.
Graduation from high school or equivalent plus any combination of training, education, or experience equivalent to American Welding Society (AWS) journey-level experience, and considerable (six (6) months to two (2) years) experience in fabrication and welding using MIG, TIG, SMAW, oxygen/acetylene, and brazing processes. A minimum of six (6) months lead experience. Must be able to obtain an AWS welding certification on G, 2G, 3G and 4G within one (1) year of employment and must maintain certification.
 
Must pass a physical evaluation, drug test, driver's license check, criminal history background check. Valid Texas Driver License required - must obtain a Class B CDL license within one year of employment
 
Monday - Friday; 8am - 5pm (hours subject to change based on customer or emergency needs); overtime and emergency call-in as needed.
