City of Miami is Hiring a CITY ATTORNEY Near Miami, FL

The City of Miami is seeking a City Attorney to lead the in-house legal department of the City and supervise the services of all attorneys employed by the City and its agencies. The City Attorney is a charter officer of the City, responsible for all legal matters related to the City's municipal government and corporate affairs. Additionally, the City Attorney shall be a full-time government employee and shall not engage in the private practice of law.

This position directs, coordinates and administers all legal matters concerning the City of Miami; interviews and appoints professional legal staff to handle all legal issues concerning City government; provides legal advice and direction to the City Manager, department heads and the City Commissioners in the best interest of the City; and supervises activities of the Assistant City Attorneys.
This position is responsible for administrative and budgetary coordination of the Office of the City Attorney; serves as legal advisor and consultant in the resolution of complex legal matters, with legal staff and other administrators as needed; is responsible for representing the City in court and before quasi-judicial or administrative agencies of government; and may perform other duties of a legal/administrative nature as designated by local laws and the City Charter. The City Attorney reports to the City Commission.

  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited school of law,
  • Must be an attorney-at-law eligible to practice in the State of Florida and in good standing with The Florida Bar,
  • Have a minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible legal experience of which at least five (5) years must be in public sector and local government law. 

Please Note: Applications will be screened according to the qualifications outlined above. Screening interviews with the most qualified applicants will be conducted by the Selection Committee. Finalist will advance to interviews with the City Commissioners. Higher consideration will be given to those candidates who possess City, County, & Local Government Law Certification issued by The Florida Bar.

Candidates will be subject to a Level II background screening.

 

The salary is negotiable and will be established by the City Commission.

Official/unofficial transcripts are also accepted. If submitting transcripts, transcripts must include the following: student's name, school name, number of credits, degree completion, and major. Audit/Academic reports are not accepted as substitutions for college transcripts. 

Foreign diplomas/degrees must be submitted with a credential evaluation report from an approved credential evaluation agency*. Translations of diploma/degrees are not accepted. If degree/diploma does not reflect the academic major on its face, transcripts indicating degree completion must be submitted. Audit/Academic reports are not accepted as substitutions for college transcripts.

*Approved Credential Evaluation Agencies

Credential evaluation reports showing the United States equivalency for academic credentials earned in other countries may be provided by:

  • An accredited four-year college or university in the United States, OR
  • A current member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES), OR
  • A current member of the Association of International Credential Evaluators (AICE), OR
  • A recognized Professional Organization
