This is responsible professional and technical work involving moderately difficult duties in historic preservation. The position’s incumbent will exercise considerable independent judgment and discretion and will perform the duties under general supervision and direction. Work is predominantly intellectual and varied in character as opposed to routine mental, mechanical, manual, or physical work. This is a temporary position in the Planning Department reporting to the Preservation Officer or his/her designee.
The position incumbent applies professional historic preservation principles, practices and techniques to a wide variety of routine and moderately advanced historic preservation projects. The duties of the position include, but are not limited to: assisting in reviewing, analyzing, conducting site visits, reporting findings, and making recommendations on applications proposed work affecting historic properties and properties in Environmental Preservation Districts and Scenic Transportation Corridors; approving building permits and issues Certificates of Appropriateness, Certificates of Approvals, and all other permits and/or programs administered by the Historic & Environmental Division; conducting historic resources surveys; conducting research and assisting in preparing designation reports for proposed historic sites and historic districts; providing technical assistance to property owners and neighborhood groups; responding verbally and in writing to inquiries regarding historic and environmental preservation; assisting in the overall administration and making presentations and reports to the Historic and Environmental Preservation Board; ensuring implementation of and compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 as amended (NHPA) including significant investigation into potential problems through contacts with Federal, state, and local officials, including mandatory consultation necessary to receive project clearance; implementing Ad Valorum Tax Program and Transfer of Development Rights and Density programs; performing other related work as required.
