City of Miami Beach FL is Hiring a Sanitary Sewer Superintendent Near Miami, FL

Nature of Work

This position performs professional and administrative work overseeing the planning and management of the operation, renewal, construction, repair, and maintenance of the sanitary sewer systems for the City's Public Works Department. The emphasis of work is on sanitary sewer systems and complaint servicing. Work involves the performance of and the direction of crews in all sanitary sewer system operation, care, and repair phases.

Illustrative Examples of Essential Duties

  • Plans, supervises and participates in the work of crews involved in the operation, monitoring, installation, construction, inspection, maintenance, repair, overall cleaning, and general care of all sanitary sewer systems, tanks, pumps, and flow control devices
  • Consults with operations supervisors to review ongoing projects, plan future projects, and review employee development, training, and adherence to safe work standards
  • Oversees the preparation of reports and records on division activities
  • Establishes procedures and standards for the work of the division
  • Researches and develops specifications for materials and services and consults with budget and purchasing personnel
  • Develops and monitors annual budgets
  • Gathers and reviews data to support the work of the Human Resources Department, Risk Management Division, Legal Department, and insurance carrier in tort cases
  • Consults with Human Resources Department personnel to fill vacant positions, resolve grievances, and proceed with disciplinary actions
  • Consults with state, county, federal, and other municipalities regarding system service operating parameters, rules, contracts, mutual aid agreements, training, and material specifications
  • Investigates and resolves sanitary sewer system-related problems such as unauthorized discharges, pollution complaints, health hazards, water quality, and contamination; responds to public inquiries, complaints, and other unusual problems
  • Develop emergency plans and prepare field forces to handle unforeseen situations like hazardous pollutant discharges into the sanitary sewer systems and natural calamities such as hurricanes, floods, etc.
  • Receives and responds to citizen inquiries
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
  • Trains and evaluates the work of supervisory, skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled workers
  • Establishes and enforces safety standards and safe operating procedures
  • Prepares, maintains, and evaluates employee and equipment operations, performance records, and reports
  • Completes research, participates in training, and maintains contacts to remain informed on current developments, programs, regulations, and procedures in assignments; incorporates such information into training
  • Inspects construction and repairs by crews, citizens, and private companies for conformance with applicable regulations
  • Works in conjunction with design, inspection, technical personnel, regulatory, and other agencies to ensure compliance with required laws, regulations, standards, guidelines, and procedures
  • Inventories, evaluates and makes detailed recommendations for modifying or purchasing necessary parts, supplies, materials, services, and equipment and maintains stock as directed
  • Assists in other major Public Works projects outside of typical areas of responsibility
  • Performs related work as required

Minimum Requirements

  • An Associate Degree in Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering may substitute for three years of experience
  • Five (5) years of experience in the construction, repair, operation, and maintenance of sanitary sewer systems, including three (3) years experience in a supervisory capacity
  • Must possess a Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License with endorsements
  • Must possess a Level “A” Wastewater Collection System Operator Certification
  • Must possess a Class “3” Utilities Maintenance Certification
  • Must possess NIMS 100, 200, 700 and 800 Certifications
  • Must possess a NASSCO Pipeline, Lateral, and Manhole Certification
  • Extensive knowledge of the principles, practices, and equipment used in sewer system construction, repair, and maintenance
  • Considerable knowledge of civil engineering principles applied to sewer system operations
Additional training and/or certification in the areas of water, wastewater, and stormwater
Physical Requirements
  • Must have the use of sensory skills to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact
  • Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office-related equipment, such as, but not limited to, word processor, calculator, copier, and fax machine
  • Continuous walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, handling, sitting, standing, pushing, and pulling
  • Ability to lift at least 65 pounds
