Description/Duties

A Parks and Aquatics Maintenance Technician is responsible for performing journey-level work that involves installing, maintaining, inspecting, and troubleshooting small and large pumps, vertical turbine pumps, motors up to 100 HP, and related equipment (example: hydraulics, electrical components, etc.) at parks, basins, aquatics facilities, and park decorative fountains, ball fields, and lakes. Duties involve installing, altering, maintaining, and repairing electrical control systems, including 120/240 volt and/or 277/480 volt systems, ball valves, butterfly valves, check valves, clay-valves, master valves, filtration systems, aerators, and air compressors; checking motor amp draws; working with single and three phase electrical; pulling and replacing small and large pumps, motors, compressors, and related equipment; replacing shaft seals, impellers, and bearings; monitoring and repairing pool-filtering equipment including water pumps, chemical dispenser systems, and chlorine gas chlorinators; testing and maintaining backflow valves, including certified testing; performing construction related work including constructing concrete forms, pouring, and finishing concrete; and performing and maintaining preventative maintenance activities and records. This class is responsible for performing related duties as required.
An employee in this class is required to use appropriate safety equipment and follow safety procedures in performing assignments. The employee may be assigned to a shift which includes nights, weekends, and holidays, and is subject to stand-by during peak use. This class is supervised by the Parks Maintenance Supervisor or Parks and Community Facilities Maintenance Foreman who reviews work through work orders, conferences, and spot-checking for results achieved. This class works with a high degree of independence which requires good judgment and initiative in determining the methods and procedures that will be used for each job or project. Employees in this class will be assigned to a seven-day rotational call-out. This class is FLSA nonexempt.

Qualifications & Requirements

Minimum Qualifications Required . Any combination of training, education, and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or GED. Considerable (3 - 5 years) work experience in the performance of journey-level pump mechanic work, including experience in water pump operation and/or water delivery systems or related equipment or systems.
Special Requirement. Must possess a valid Class D Arizona Driver's License by hire or promotion date.
Preferred/Desirable Qualifications. Commercial level experience in pump maintenance (small and large pumps, vertical turbine pumps) and electrical controls (24V to 480V systems); work experience in the performance of journey-level pump mechanic work or experience with medium to low voltage pump station controls; variable frequency drives; and programmable logic controllers. Successful completion of a four (4) year electrical apprenticeship or trades program.
