City of Memphis Careers is Hiring a Pollution Control Inspector - (2 openings) Near Memphis, TN

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Works under the supervision of the zone supervisor of environmental inspection in the Public Works Division. Conducts internal pipe inspections of sewer lines by operating equipment such as mobile television with closed circuit TV camera, flow-meters, and smoke test blowers to determine sewer repair needs throughout the City and County. Locates line sections to be inspected and determines setup procedures. Provides direction to workers in positioning equipment, cables, and chemicals. Monitors equipment to locate and identify inflow- infiltration points and sewer line defects. Operates control panel of mobile television unit to activate and adjust television equipment in order to video tape condition of sewer line or to photograph serious or unusual irregularities. Records pertinent data and prepares reports of findings and action taken. Communicates with workers using mobile radio, and confers with supervisor to discuss conditions of sewer lines. Gives directions to workers in efficient and safe use of equipment. Communicates with residents to answer questions and explain proceedings. Inspects equipment to detect malfunctions and to perform routine maintenance. Drives vehicles to work site including TV van, wash truck, or pick-up truck. Inspections are conducted in alleys, woods, and flood areas and will occasionally require riding in small boat and helicopter. Keeps abreast of emerging trends and changes in the enforcement of federal, state, and local regulations regarding sewer ordinance.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
1. Attends court to provide technical data regarding sewer line conditions as needed.
2. Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires ability to operate trucks. Requires ability to monitor T.V. screen and operate control panel. Must be able to traverse various surfaces such as woods, weeded areas and flood lands and ability to climb into manholes. May assist workers in removing manhole covers (approx. 150 lbs.) and pulling cables. Must be able to communicate on mobile radio and to provide narration of video tape.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Majority of work is performed outdoors exposed to changing weather conditions and temperatures. May be exposed to traffic, insects, weeds, and poisonous plants. May be exposed to emulsifiers, insecticides, sewer solvents, bacteria, etc. 
 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school graduation or equivalent and one (1) year experience in sewer line maintenance and/or construction; or any combination of experience and training which enables one to perform job functions. Must possess and maintain a valid Class "B" Tennessee Commercial Driver's License with "N" tank endorsements and must comply with Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) Alcohol and Drug testing rules as a condition of continued employment.
