City of McMinnville is Hiring a Codes Enforcement Officer Near McMinnville, TN

The City of McMinnville is looking for an energetic individual with great communication skills to join our team in the Community Development Department. The Community Development Department partners with developers, builders and investors who are interested in growing the City of McMinnville. They serve as a consultant to citizens and builders who take on improvement projects within the city limits. This position is responsible for enforcing city codes, regulations, and ordinances pertaining to litter, overgrowth, abandoned vehicles, unfit structures, zoning and dumpsites. The potential candidate will serve as a partner to citizens and builders to help uphold the city codes and find solutions to potential roadblocks. Employees will be required to safely operate a City vehicle. This position works both indoors and outdoors with possibility of exposure to adverse weather conditions. The candidate should be comfortable utilizing mobile phones, tablets and familiar with computers.

The City of McMinnville offers a competitive pay and benefits program. Starting compensation for this position is $45,281.00. Medical benefits offered with a competitive premium; the City pays 85% of the premium. Dental and Vision benefits are also available. City employees have a life insurance plan of $50,000 for the employee, $10,000 for the spouse and $5000 for children at no cost. All employees are covered under the retirement plan through TCRS with no cost to the employee. 457b plan is available with the City matching up to $1300 annually. There are 14 paid holidays and market competitive time off available.

Minimum Requirements to be considered for the position:

HS Degree or equivalent

Ability to read and write comprehensively

Certified as a Property Maintenance Inspector by International Code Council or ability to obtain with 1 year of employment

Certified as a Zoning Inspector by the International Code Council or ability to obtain within 2 years of employment

Certified as a Codes Enforcement Officer by the American Association of Code Enforcement officers or ability to obtain within 2 years of employment

Possess a valid driver's license

Essential Functions:

  • Performs inspections of houses and property for conformance with applicable codes, regulations and ordinances pertaining to litter, overgrowth, abandoned vehicles, unfit structures, zoning and dumpsites.
  • Enforces illegal dumping ordinances; investigates illegal dumping and dump sites; inspects debris to determine source
  • Investigates and enforces complaints for code violations
  • Handles written and oral correspondence relative to code violations
  • Discusses problems with property owners in order to obtain voluntary code compliance; prepares warrants, and appears in court when necessary
  • Maintains records of inspections activities; makes photographic records of violations
  • Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, logs, inspection reports, notices, formal warnings, citations, affidavits, and court disposition forms
  • Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, inspection reports, police/fire reports, newspapers, photographs, maps, property records, legal documents, manuals, codes, ordinances, directories, reference material, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate
  • Communicates via telephone and/or two way radio, and email; provides information; takes and relays messages; responds to requests for service or assistance
  • Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, city council members, board members, attorneys, property owners, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems
  • Operates a computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data; verifies accuracy of entered data and makes corrections as appropriate
  • Performs other duties as required
