Job Description
Under general supervision, the Public Services Librarian plans, develops, and provides information and technology assistance, and plans programs and special activities for the public.
Job Responsibilities
1. Provides reference, information and general library assistance to the public, in person, electronically, and by telephone, and assists patrons with the use of resources and technologies.
2. Assists patrons with complaints, concerns, and research requests.
3. Selects books and other library materials, and participates in collection maintenance and management.
5. Plans, implements, and evaluates library programs and services which meet the diverse needs of the public.
6. Develops and maintains effective community partnerships.
7. Assists with implementation of programs, tours, outreaches, and special library activities.
8. Acts as point of contact in the absence of a supervisor to interpret and enforce library policies.
9. Prepares reports and other printed materials as required.
10. Supports library initiatives and programs through participation on system-wide and City-wide committees, and by providing effective physical and digital displays and community outreach.
11. Assists with displays, book lists, and decoration of the department.
12. Attends professional workshops and meetings to continually update professional skills.
13. Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Minimum Requirements - 1. Job requires a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. A Master's degree in Library Science or a related field is preferred.
2. Job requires one (1) year of experience providing service to the public.
3. Job requires a current, valid Texas Class C driver’s license.
4. Must have working knowledge of common computer applications, internet use, and social media.
5. Must have knowledge of basic library functions and practices, permitting the solution of complex as well as routine work problems toward a positive outcome.
6. Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, patrons, user groups, community organizations, volunteers, and to serve the public with courtesy.
7. Must have clear, concise oral and written communication skills to prepare and present reports and programs.
8. English and Spanish bilingual communications skills are preferred.
9. Must be able to meet departmental goals and objectives, job responsibilities, and essential job duties.
Physical Requirements
1. Must be able to lift or push up to 25 pounds on a frequent basis.
Additional Information
1. Position requires working evenings and weekends.
2. This position is safety sensitive and may be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
3. This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
