Starting Salary Range: $43,388.80 - $52,051.00, DOQ Closing Date: Open Until Filled

Workdays/Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Summary/Objective

The Construction Inspector role is a technical position in the Engineering Division that assists with all aspects of the mission of the Division. The focus of the position will be in assisting the Project Coordinator with performing construction inspection duties. The incumbent assists with overseeing public works construction project to insure they are constructed according to the plans and specifications approved by theCity and that all related data is properly recorded.

Essential Functions

Performs inspections and testing duties as required by division needs.

  • Performs utility and grading inspections to ensure positive drainage is achieved and utility infrastructure is installed per specification and no damage.
  • Performs inspection of forms prior to placement of streets, sidewalks and driveway approaches. Inspect sidewalk and sidewalk ramps for ADA and PROWAG compliance.
  • Conducts stormwater compliance inspections and inspects flood overflow paths for compliance with the design drawings.
  • Determines adherence to engineering specifications and derives the necessary field calculations from work completed; ensuring that the elements of construction are accurate and conform to approved City plan and specifications as well as regulations and standards.
  • Makes recommendations on the disposition of materials by checking for adherence to standards.
  • Reads and interprets construction plans in order to update complicated as-built drawings and existing maps including but not limited to planning, utilities and other maps that require updating.
  • Utilizes basic principles and practices of civil engineering to locate, review, and research job locations for identifying landmarks, physical objects, and significant land changes that would affect construction and surveying.

Performs additional administrative and maintenance duties as required.

  • Assures proper maintenance and care of all equipment.
  • Contributes to keeping project costs within original estimates. Performs administrative functions such as completing time sheets and
    documenting expenditures.
  • Performs computer computations related to construction quantities.
  • Provides precise project documentation by maintaining accuracy and thoroughness of records and files.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Required Education and Experience

  • High School diploma, GED or equivalent.
  • Three (3) years of related construction inspection experience.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • The following certifications must be current or obtained within 6 months of hire:

a. American Concrete Institute Certification or equivalent KDOT Certified Concrete Field-Testing Technician.

b. Certified KDOT or equivalent Erosion Control Inspector

c. Certified KDOT or equivalent Water Pollution Control Manager

d. Certified KDOT or equivalent Nuclear Moisture Density Gauge Tester.

e. Certified KDOT Aggregate Field Tester.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Post-secondary education in engineering, construction science or related field preferred.
  • Experience in construction surveying.
