The City of Mandan, North Dakota is currently accepting applications for the position of: 

Equipment Operator I - Grade 12

Position Details:

Salary starting at $20.88/hour

Status: Full-Time / Non-Exempt

Department: Public Works

Closing Date:  May 10th, 2024

Opportunity to be promoted to Equipment Operator II (Grade 14) after one year of experience with the City of Mandan as Equipment Operator I and completion of other requirements. 

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for the operation of equipment in support for assigned public works functions. 

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Operates a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Maintains and repairs assigned tools and equipment.
  • Operates equipment in support of cemetery, road maintenance, snow removal, landfill, street sign and pavement marking, and other department operations.
  • Performs pre-operation inspections to identify maintenance needs; reports repair needs to supervisor.
  • Required to work various schedules that include nights, weekends, and holidays; respond to after-hours emergencies, modified workweeks, subject to on-call hours as assigned. Must be able to report to work within 45 minutes from time of after-hours notifications.
  • Performs related duties.

Streets/Landfill

  • Operates motor grader, bobcat, dump truck, crack sealer, street sweeper, front-end loader, and other equipment as assigned.
  • Performs a variety of other street and landfill maintenance tasks.

Grounds Maintenance/Cemetery/Forestry

  • Operates a variety of small engine equipment, including mowers, weed eaters, etc.
  • Manages the city’s Tree City USA recertification.
  • Digging of graves, trimming of cemetery, mowing vacant lots, and snow removal on city properties. 
  • Trims/removes trees that are in violation of city ordinances, chips fallen trees/limbs that may fall that are city responsibility, grind stumps of removed trees on city property or that fall within city ordinance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Dakota for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Obtaining a valid Class B License with airbrake endorsement is required within the probationary period.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Knowledge of street and other public works maintenance principles.
  • Knowledge of landfill maintenance and operations principles.
  • Knowledge of department and city policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance principles.
  • Knowledge of city ordinances related to tree maintenance and management
  • Skill in problem solving.
  • Skill in the operation of a variety of construction equipment.
  • Skill in the operation of hand and power tools.
  • Skill in prioritizing and planning.
  • Skill in establishing safe work zones.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
