City of Madison, WI is Hiring a Traffic Systems and Networking Specialist Near Madison, WI

General Description

This position assists with the installation and ongoing maintenance of traffic devices, aimed at ensuring the smooth and safe movement of people and goods throughout the Madison metro region. This leadworker position is situated within the Electrical Section of Traffic Engineering, operating at a highly skilled technical level equivalent to that of a master electrician. Daily tasks may involve working with live electricity. Under limited supervision, this position is responsible for coordinating and overseeing the installation and repair of complex electrical/electronic computerized equipment associated with traffic signals, street lighting, fiber optic network, and other City-maintained equipment and systems. The work of this position is characterized by the exercise of independent judgment in organizing work and directing Electrical Section employees.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

Install, modify, maintain, repair, program, and update traffic signal and street lighting systems.
  • Program and monitor the operation of controllers and computer systems used for traffic signals and street lighting.
  • Assist supervisor and engineers in the research/design of equipment used for traffic signals, street lights, and fiber network systems.
  • Assist supervisor and engineers with and/or develop techniques and designs to integrate new and existing equipment as applicable.
  • Test and develop programs used for traffic signals, street lights, and related activities.
Install, modify, maintain, and repair traffic signals, street lights, emergency alarm systems at an electrician level and/or in a leadworker capacity.
  • Install, modify, maintain and repair traffic signal equipment (e.g. signal poles, signal heads and related traffic signal hardware; pour concrete, computer-based controllers, vehicle detectors, cameras, microwave and radar induction loops, etc).
  • Install, modify, maintain and repair street light equipment (e.g. set poles, arms, fixtures, ballasts, transformers, electrical vaults, photocells, control panels, fuses, etc).
  • Install electrical services.
  • Respond to and make emergency repairs (accidents, contractor hits, etc).
  • Locate and mark underground utilities (Digger’s Hotline).
  • Attend pre-construction meetings.
Network installation, modification, troubleshooting and repair.
  • Oversee the installation and repair of City fiber optic network operations.
  • Repair fiber using Fiber Splicing equipment.
  • Document network installations and modifications.
  • Install other network cables and devices (e.g.: LAN; Ethernet).
  • Install, maintain, and repair surveillance cameras.
  • Provide technical support to City Information Technology Department.
Perform general leadworker duties.
  • Prioritize, plan, assign, train, oversee and review daily work of section employees.
  • Review work reports and end of project billings and maintain related data bases.
  • Oversee the electrical section inspection of contractors involved in City projects.
  • Oversee material ordering. Review and maintain inventory as needed.
Perform miscellaneous worker activities.
  • Perform electrical inspections, direct contractors, and make field modifications as needed. Ensure compliance with state and local public work specifications.
  • Complete and verify daily work orders and records for installations, modifications, repairs, scheduled maintenance, and billing information.
  • Complete “as built” drawings.
  • Perform emergency repair work as needed, including standby duties.
Perform related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Three (3) years of skilled journey level electrical and crew leader work involving the installation, inspection, maintenance and repair of traffic signal, street lighting, data communication and emergency alarm systems comparable to that gained as a Traffic Signal Electrician 2 with the City of Madison.

If an applicant does not possess the specific requirements outlined above, HR will review the application materials to determine if the applicant possesses the following equivalent experience:
Four (4) years experience in applying the following:
  • Installation, operation, maintenance, repair of traffic signals and street lighting systems including computerized controllers; fiber optics and related networking equipment, alarm systems and associated equipment.
  • Streetlights, circuits and related equipment.
  • Underground equipment locating methods and techniques.
  • Electrical occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Work zone safety procedures.
  • Computers and computer-based equipment and the ability to use associated programs and develop special-purpose applications.
Two (2) years experience in applying the following:
  • Basic traffic signal timing principles.

Special Requirements

  • Possession of a valid Class A CDL with air brakes – preferred at date of hire, must be able to obtain within 6 months of hire, minus extenuating circumstances.
  • Traffic Signal Electrician 2 certification – within 6 months of hire.
  • CPR Certification – within 6 months of hire.
  • Master Electrician License (State of WI) – preferred at date of hire, must be able to obtain within 6 months of hire, minus extenuating circumstances.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift/carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds on occasion and objects weighing up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.

  • Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather, in high-traffic situations and at various heights above the ground using aerial trucks and ladders.

  • Must be able to frequently walk, bend, squat, climb, kneel, stoop and lift arms overhead to perform work for extended periods of time.
