City of Madison, WI is Hiring a Construction Inspector (Hourly) Near Madison, WI

General Description

As a Construction Inspector you will perform technical/paraprofessional and related manual work in support of engineering programs. Work is performed under the supervision of a professional Engineer, Surveyor, Construction Inspector, Sidewalk Program Supervisor or Public Works Supervisor. Although duties vary based on assignment, current vacancies exist in construction activities, surveying and utility locating/ marking.
The payroll titles for Engineering Construction Inspector are Engineering Field Aide, Engineering Assistant 1 or Engineering Assistant 2, depending on the qualifications of the selected applicant. Level (Engineering Field Aide, Assistant 1, 2) and salary of hire will depend on assigned duties; higher level duties may be assigned for selected applicants with greater training and experience.
Engineering Field Aide (Construction Inspector) $19.17/hour
Engineering Asst 1 (Construction Inspector) $20.96/hour
Engineering Asst 2 (Construction Inspector) $22.33/hour
HOURS: 7:00 AM - 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday, April 1 to November 30, summer positions available.

THIS ANNOUNCEMENT WILL CREATE AN ELIGIBLE LIST. APPLICANTS WILL ONLY BE CONTACTED IF AND WHEN THE VACANCIES OCCUR TO SCHEDULE AN INTERVIEW.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in the inspection of storm and sanitary sewer, curb and gutter, asphalt and concrete pavement, and sidewalk for conformance to specifications.
  • Assist survey crew with a variety of tasks as related to public works construction projects. Maintain assigned equipment.
  • Use computerized maps to locate underground storm and sanitary facilities. Mark in field according to established procedures.
  • Conduct field inspections using handheld GPS data collector.
  • Perform utility marking and locating.
  • Perform related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Engineering Field Aide:
  • All applicants qualify.
Engineering Assistant 1:
  • One (1) year of college courses leading toward a degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering or an equivalent. Closely related experience may be substituted for the required education.
Engineering Assistant 2:
  • Two (2) years of college courses leading toward a degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering or an equivalent. Closely related experience may be substituted for the required education.
If an applicant does not possess the specific requirements outlined above, HR will review the application materials to determine if the applicant possesses the following equivalent experience:
Familiarity with the following:
  • General principles of civil engineering.
  • Use of computers and computer programs (Microsoft Excel and Word are currently used in the Engineering Division).
  • Surveying equipment and methods used in marking field surveys.

Special Requirements

  • Possession of a valid Wisconsin driver's license.
  • Employee must provide their own vehicle and will receive mileage reimbursement for vehicle use.
  • Employees hired for a limited number of positions may need to provide their own vehicle. Employees who are required to provide their own vehicle will receive mileage reimbursement for vehicle use.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time, walking long distances.
  • Must be able to lift objects weighing up to 75 pounds (lift sewer access structure lids.)
  • May work in adverse weather conditions and traverse uneven terrain including trench excavations.
  • Ability to install wood stakes and lathe with an 8 lb. maul/hammer.
  • Payroll title for these positions are Engineering Field Aide, Engineering Assistant 1, and Engineering Assistant 2.
